New So I got to wondering whatever happened to the Zune.
And found [link|http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=207262&cid=16899038|this] comment on /., which seems to sum it up in a nutshell.

ETA: And I still don't know anyone - at all, online or IRL - who's got one. Even gadgetboy who sat next to me at work, who had the [link|http://www.mobilegazette.com/nokia-n93-06x04x25.htm|single biggest mobile phone in the universe], and various Archos media players, was on first-name terms with the staff at [link|http://www.firebox.com|http://www.firebox.com] and introduced me to [link|http://www.tokyoflash.com|http://www.tokyoflash.com], didn't have one.

New :-)
New I think of the Penny Arcade boys have one.

Is it enough to love
Is it enough to breathe
Somebody rip my heart out
And leave me here to bleed

Is it enough to die
Somebody save my life
I'd rather be Anything but Ordinary
Please

New In Amazon's hourly top-100 electronics sellers last night...
...the white one was at eighth place, not too far off the 80-GB black iPod Classic that rose from seventh to sixth in the time it took for me to go through all four pages of the list and return to the first one. OK, re-checking... that iPod still at six, silver 4-GB "Nano with Video" now at ten, white 30-GB Zune down to 13. Lots more iPods, no other Zunes (i.e, most definitely no brown ones! :-) , among the top 100.

Still, AFAICS, a top-25 place on Amazon's sales stats must mean it isn't as *totally* dead as you all are implying.

New Not even in the top 100 on .co.uk
...in fact, they don't even sell them directly. Just through that weird Amazon Marketplace thing.

New I don't think those rankings mean much.
The white one is #10 in Electronics at the moment. #1 is a HDMI cable.

The first 3 books on the Zune listed as most relevant have sales ranks of:

#58,213, #234,572, and #56,506. Comparable iPod books are ranked #25,759, #29,811, and #15,610.

While it's true that book sales aren't a direct measure of a product's popularity, there's certainly a relationship to the market size and interest.

It's understandable, from a marketing standpoint, why Amazon doesn't list overall sales ranks for products the way they do for books, but it invites manipulation.

Cheers,
Scott.
