so I can speak to my wife without anyone else around me knowing what I am saying, unless they too speak Thai. My wife tells me that there is no grammar in Thai, the way that English has grammar.

Actually from what I understand it is more dificult to learn english and I am still working on that one. Total immersion would be the only way to truly learn japanese and then just enough to get by.

1. Japanese is sufficiently different from English that trying to learn it gives you a new insight into your own language.

2. Studying the language and culture, even casually, gives you a new insight into a foreign people. I know I regard Asians differently than before I began learning Japanese.
