If it works...

only used as a file server for 3 computers. Always has worked, why change/upgrade? Now if it was visible on the internet I'd be worried about security.

So what's it gonna take to move to Ubunutu? iow how much work...

New Copy your files to a local machine...
burn an ISO with the server CD image.

Install.

Add a few users to the linux machine.

Setup Samba similarly. Use SWAT, it just works.

Move files back. All done.
