Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Debian doesn't have a default desktop, afaik.
I thunk Debian was desktop-agnostic.

What was it you installed? GNOME? KDE? XFCE? Fluxbox? GNUStep?

I have an OS/2 Warp 4 VM floating around here somewhere and quite frankly it looks like arse (I haven't twiddled with it, so it's all at defaults) compared with the current offerings from GNOME and KDE.

Debian Etch, out of the box running GNOME:

OS/2 Warp 4.

(I've lost my Warp 4 VM. Rebuild required. Will post own pic when done.)

That OS/2 pic is non-standard. Note the Windows 98/IE4 "desktop" icon at the top left.

New Yes it has a default desktop.
All I did was check install options
  • Desktop
  • Web Server
  • Print Server
  • File Server
  • Mail Server
  • Standard
and it came up to the desktop on reboot.

The suite I normally install for my server VAR clients is
  • Print Server
  • File Server
  • Standard
Adding the additional services made no change whatever in the install except it took longer.

New Which Disk#1 did you use?
There are three variants.

Disk #1 == GNOME
Disk #1 - KDE == KDE
Disk #1 - XFCE == XFCE

New From the official 21 CD stable distribution . .
. . purchased from 0-Bits.com. It installed Gnome, and that's what I've heard is the Debian distribution default.
[link|http://www.aaxnet.com|AAx]
New They missed the 2 additional disks for disk #1
GNOME only happens to have been the choice for the "Disk #1", the others are seen by many as "alternates".

They aren't. They are the DE selection you want. By no means id Debian's default Desktop Environment GNOME, you just happen to use the GNOME based Disk #1, rather than the KDE based Disk #1 or the XFCE based Disk #1.

You should really be installing from the net-install disk now a day, in any case, Andrew. It is what every distro is aiming at, especially Debian and Ubuntu. (Many others are aiming, but well)

New I install from the CD set for a reason.
Repeatability.

I have to be ready to maintain the systems I build for as long as 10 years. Yes, I've had servers in continuous operation for 10 years. If something goes wrong I need to be able to rebuild the system exactly as it was originally installed.

This is not a hobby.

New Then you should investigate FAI.
The Fully Automatic Installer.

Could have been made for you.

New OK.
You keep repeating that like it is going to mean something.

Linux is not Windows, which changes daily depending on what Microsoft thinks is good.

Nor is it OS/2, which hasn't really changed for 10 years.

New Dood, he doesn't care about computers
To tell you the truth, neither do I any more. I care about computers as much as I care about telephones. They're necessary to what I do, but I couldn't care less who makes it or what it runs. As long as it works the same way every time I touch it. (So yes, that rules Windows almost completely out. I use Linux when I have a choice.)

If I thought I could have a single install that worked without updates for 10 years, and continue to do everything I want, I'd use it. If I were installing either a standalone application or something on a private network -- which I'm betting describes 90% of Andrew's clients -- I'd do the exact same thing, burn it to disk and store it somewhere.

If learning the install options for another distro makes me more money, saves me time, or improves my life, I'll do it. Otherwise, it's a waste of my time. And last I heard, they're not making any more of that.

New Private networks it is.
The only reason any of these machines have a connection to the Internet is so the VAR can log in with SSH to make fixes and transfer files back and forth.

When a server I haven't seen for 7 years goes down it means the client can't ship product or the lab can't report sample results and nobody can print invoices. They are panicking - the server must be up again immediately and there's simply no time to fiddle with anything new or anything that doesn't work right.

We still have plenty of older systems out there accessible only by modem, but we're trying to get them on Internet access when we can - modem communications is just too unreliable and slow.

New Just to pick nits . . .
. . the official April 8th 2007 release page for Etch on Debian's site includes this phrase, "GNOME is the default desktop environment" (emphasis mine) - but they do mention the other two Disk #1 versions.

New Agreed.
Still, the point stands.

Your screenshots make my point adequately.
