Swish phone sans camera - does it have the bands you need, though? It's a quaddie.

New "Quad Band" is 850/900/1800/1900 MHz here.
Much of the USA is 850 MHz, so a phone without it is pretty limited when traveling. The 2100 MHz and similar bands are for data (and are different between the USA and the rest of the world, of course) and are usually considered separately. [link|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CDMA2000|CDMA2000] versus [link|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W-CDMA|W-CDMA], versus [link|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Mobile_Telecommunications_System|UMTS], etc., etc. Alphabet Soup!!! :-/

It looks like a nice phone though, and it's something to think about. Thanks for the pointer.

Cheers,
Scott.

New Re: "Quad Band" is 850/900/1800/1900 MHz here.
E61i is an interesting device, but I note it's an S60 phone. Couple of cow-orkers have these and they're really, really not snappy compared to my S40 6300; also, you need need need to get the firmware updates on if the device ships with the initial version of the software. Many crashes and annoyances were resolved fairly early on by Nokia.

Mobile Gazette (who are usually on the money, pretty much) are ambivalent about it. Also, the E61i (which seems to be an evolution on the original E61, which is now 18 months old) has grown a camera.

New Woot!
The cameraphone ban has been lifted.

It still looks like GSM is the way to go for the best battery life, and Quad Band looks to be the most flexible. I have a lot more choices now.

The Nokia E90 looks neat, but for ~ $900 unlocked, it should be. :-/ Plus, it's not available yet.

Many more choices in a smartphone now... Gotta keep looking.

Cheers,
Scott.
New YES
I have a cdma phone, and it's a battery hog. Next time I buy a phone I'm not getting one of these fuckers, that's for sure.
New I'm going to stick with what I've got, for now.
AT&T Wireless seems to have too many problems for me to be confident that the phone won't be a source of greater aggravation. Plus, I have 2 different phone lines on my Sprint account (for me and my Mom) and I don't want to mess up her service or have to change it, so I'll wait for a while longer before getting a different phone/PDA/etc.

My thought of changing phones was prompted by recent huge increases in my wife's [link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/content/show?contentid=286530|bill]. Her sister, who she calls the most, is on Verizon. Since calls to other Verizon customers are free, she has just changed from Sprint to Verizon. Also, Verizon seems to be the best of the national carriers in the US at the moment - which isn't saying much, unfortunately.

She got a [link|http://www.motorola.com/motoinfo/product/details.jsp?globalObjectId=148|V3m]. It'll play music, but not MP3s - only WMAs - so some [link|http://forums.wirelessadvisor.com/razr-phones/54510-motorola-razr-cdma-versions-v3c-v3m-2.html|conversions] are in order. It also only recognizes up to 1 GB of microSD storage. :-/ I'm not sure if I want to try [link|http://mark.cdmaforums.com/|hacking it] to re-enable features that Verizon has disabled. She also considered the Krzr (which has a longer claimed battery life), but the V3m has a form-factor closer to her existing Motorola [link|http://www.epinions.com/elec-Comm-Mobile_Phones-Hardware-All-Motorola_Timeport_P8767/display_~reviews|TimePort] so that was the deciding factor.

The V3m is charging now. We'll see how it goes.

Thanks for all the pointers.

Cheers,
Scott.

Mandatory cayenne enemas would have the same effect.
