New Tried Parallels 3 on a MacIntelitosh yet?
The idea of having OS X in a portable box and running Winders, Linux and even OS/2 on it at the same time as guests using [link|http://www.parallels.com/en/products/desktop/|Parallels] is seeming very appealing. Should I start saving up for a MacBook Pro?

Any first-hand experiences with v3? I've used v2 on a PC (a little) and it seems well done, but I don't know if it works well enough for routine, every-day, work in VMs. We don't yet have a MacIntelitosh.

Can you get these things without the built-in camera? :-/

Thanks.

Cheers,
Scott.
(Who would consider a cheaper MacBook as it's a little [link|http://www.apple.com/macbook/specs.html|more portable] - 13"x9"x1" versus 14"x10"x1", but it's not significantly lighter than a [link|http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/specs.html|15" MBP] and the screen has fewer pixels.)
New V2 works very well on my MacBook Pro
And why do you care if there's a camera? You don't have to use it...

New My workplace doesn't allow cameras... :-/
They prohibit camera phones too, which is also a problem...

Cheers,
Scott.

Oh, un-cameraphone that has Teh Bells and Teh Wissuls? S-E W950i. No camera. Much smartness.

New Neat on both counts. Thanks muchly.
My wife and I have service Sprint and have for a long time. We've generally been pretty happy, especially since we have a plan that's old enough that we don't have a contract and the first incoming minute is free. But her usual $30 monthly bill (for 300 minutes) was $250 last month, so we're looking into other options....

That's a neat phone! 7.5 hrs talk time! But it's GSM, so I'd have to change carriers - it looks like AT&T or T-Mobile would be the way to go. It doesn't get a very good review at [link|http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,2098455,00.asp|PC Magazine], but I don't care about internet connectivity. I'd just like a decent modern phone/PDA without a camera. It looks like it's about $270 and up. I'll have to do some thinking, especially with the (albeit limited-availability) iPhone coming out in a few weeks.

Thanks for the pointers.

Cheers,
Scott.
New tracphone is the answer
spent total of $80 since january on 2 cell phones. Only way to fly

New We had a T-Mobile PayAsYouGo phone.
[link|http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/plans/default.aspx?plancategory=4|T-Mobile].

(We got it for a health aid who never used it. :-/ )

It's a good idea, in principle, but it was a hassle to keep track of when the activation expired, etc., etc. It expired a year or more ago - I'd hate to think what it would cost to reactivate it (if it's even possible).

The details of PAYG plans have to be considered very carefully. :-(

I don't think it's a good fit for her because she's very close to her sister and they talk very frequently. The bill was so high because she'd started talking to her when listening to RedSox games while walking the dog, and got distracted. She needs more minutes, and having free calling after 7 pm (or 9 pm) should take care of most of the problem. But that means changing plans, so that means it's worthwhile to consider other phones and other providers. :-)

Thanks.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Hmm. It doesn't do GSM 850 MHz...
Of course, the US and most of the rest of the world use different [link|http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/index.shtml|GSM frequency bands]. The US GSM bands are 850/1900 MHz while most of the rest of the world is 900/1800 MHz. Much of the US is GSM 850 while the W950i doesn't do that band. Grr...

Nothing's easy. :-/

Cheers,
Scott.
New How about the Nokia E61?
While the cell providers in the US prefer that people use the [link|http://www.brighthand.com/default.asp?newsID=12634|E62], the E61 seems like an all-around better phone (except for the non-standard ports). Any thoughts?

The [link|http://my-symbian.com/s60v3/review_e61.php|E61] is a GSM quad-band phone with no camera. It also has WiFi and Bluetooth and various high-speed data options.

Thanks.

Cheers,
Scott.
(Who is also thinking about going with AT&T as T-Mobile doesn't have coverage over much of the country.)
New No idea
You'd look like you're ironing your face when making a call, though.

New BlueTooth is your friend.
It's much better to look like a member of the Borg who is talking to himself than to look like you're ironing your face. From the looks of many of my local fellow citizens, anyway...

New Bleh.
BT headsets are fine in the car, but they're definitely regarded, in any other context, as The Mark Of The Twat over here.

Plus it's yet another thing to keep charged up. I've got one (a Plantronics 640) and I hardly ever use it. I just turn my phone off in the car and pick up my messages afterwards, or else get my passenger to be the secretary.

New Parallels = teh roxx.
I wubs it. Solid and reliable. I reckon you could actually run up your OS of choice in it, full-screen it, and use it as your daily OS, were you so inclined.

Don't worry about the camera. If you don't run Photo Booth, it doesn't do anything.

New I have my laptop chained to my desk
only unleash it for a trip. I leave early to beat traffic and log onto the same laptop via parallels at home and finish my workday. On the odd occation I didnt completely shutdown the laptop and log in from home I get a security alert that states the machine is already on the network at a different location. Any work I need to update between the 2 is left in email or on my corporate network drive. I have a mini. Others here have Macbooks and use it to simuate the corp issued laptops. They wouldnt work any other way.
caveat
I dont write presentations or graphics except for thje occational visio diagram.
thanx,
bill

New Still messing around with VMware Fusion
In response to the Coherence feature in Parallels, VMware added a similar feature to Fusion called Unity.

Very sweet. Competition is good.

New I gave up on it
Seemed to work just fine for 90% of my stuff.

MS apps, email, etc, EXCEPT, when I went into SQL/Server enterprise maanger and told it to "discover" the available databases, Windows bluescreened.

Hmmm.

Then, the Visual Studio install failed, wierdly.

I'm much happier using VMWare ESX with a Windows 2003 server instance as my "desktop". It ALWAYS works. um, well, I mean, usually. Hey, it's still windows after all.
