New A question about Outlook...
First off, yep this question involves Outlook, and sadly a different email system isn't an option, as much as I might like it to be. Can I also add it's not my fault that I have to use Outlook at work :-)

In short, when I finish a project at work, I want to store all associated emails somewhere, outside of Outlook, where then can be easily read, accessed, sorted by date and so forth.

Currently the only option I've found is to drag the emails out of Outlook into a folder, which creates a whole bunch of .msg folders, all of which had a Date Created value of the time I dragged them into the folder. So, it's next to useless. (Hmm, just like Outlook! :)

Just to add to the fun, I'm not allowed to create my own .pst files.

So there's the problem - any thoughts on a solution? Is there perhaps a third-party product out there that makes this process any less painful? All I ask is for a way to grab a bunch of emails, and output them somewhere where they could be viewed in order of date received - being able to sort on other criteria would be a bonus.

Sigh. Every day, having to switch from using OS X's Mail.app at home, to Outlook at work, makes me sad.
Two out of three people wonder where the other one is.
New There are ways to do it with Python and other tools.
I don't know if you want to go there, but you might want to look at [link|http://webservices.xml.com/pub/a/ws/2003/05/13/email.html|this] article by Jon Udell, and [link|http://aspn.activestate.com/ASPN/Cookbook/Python/Recipe/266625|this] Python script (which puts the mail in a database...).

The other solution is to remail the stuff, but that's a last-resort, of course.

HTH a bit. Good luck.

Cheers,
Scott.

New You can't set up personal folders?
A folder, combined with google desktop for search, is what it sounds like you need.

New Setup a Linux box as an IMAPD server
Or if a box is prohibited, setup a VMWare instance on your Windows box.
Then, add the mailbox you Outlook.
At that point you drag between the 2.
New This one seems best option to me.

New Think it through...
...in an environment that mandates Outlook, where creating one's own .PST files is verboten, just what is the likelihood of being able to set up an entirely uncontrolled box and connecting it to the network?

New Good point. How about a VM?
Who'd know?

"they" would know from the controls on the machine. Question is, what would "they" do about it?

New Couple of points pertaining to the corporate setting:
1. Licencing. I'm not aware of whether The Free Stuff would work on Windows. Let's assume VMWare. Is it freely available for corporate use? If not, then the OP would have to buy a copy. Personal copies are not licenced for use at work (i.e. it's not your computer, it's the company's)

2. Most large (and not so large) companies carry out some form of auditing. It'd get picked up then. Licence issues notwithstanding, VMWare (or whatever) probably falls under the remit of "stuff the itdept doesn't want to deal with"

3. If administrator rights on the Windows box aren't forthcoming, then all bets are off; VMWare installs a number of device drivers.

All-in-all, it's probable that this is not a viable way forward, primarily not because of technical issues.

New VMWare can=Free as in beer
Unless you are using ESX. Of course, there's no licensing issue for a Linux-based VM... Heck, you can download 'em pre-made.

Without admin rights, though - MOST solutions are hosed.

New Hmmm. A thought. Does QEMU
on Windows do the same?

New Try this
First, create a subfolder in your personal folders that contains the desired emails.
Next, highlight the folder in question.
Then go to File, choose Import and Export, select Export to a file, pick Microsoft Excel (or Access or whatever), and then verify the desired folder is selected.

Continue with naming the file, etcetera. Open the resulting file in appropriate app and see if the contents are usable.

I haven't tried this in a while but I know it used to work.

You can fire an at will employee for good cause or no cause, but not bad cause.
New Two Thoughts
1) save the messages as they come in (text, HTML or whatever)

2) if you create a pst file and don't save it on a company machine, who would know?

New Archive
It's not a "personal" folder, it's an "archive" folder. You might win on semantics alone.

If the beef is with the idea of personal folders, you can still (truthfully) argue that your not creating a personal folder. Assuming you have a limited mailbox size on the Exchange server, you're just clearing out your inbox. The fact that you can copy your archive folder to a thumb drive is simply a bonux.

New Thanks all
Hmm... Maybe I should set up a rule that forwards all my emails to a dev unix server as they hit my Inbox...

Anyway, thanks muchly for giving it so much thought. Ultimately, I guess (hope) that it'll be other people trawling through the maze of twisty little .msg files, all alike, rather than myself.

One further update - I had anotehr look at Outlooks import/export facilities. They are breahtaking in the vast scope of their uselessness - completely failing to include any date-based information at all. It's very clear M$ do all they can to ensure you do not escape from Outlook. Do not pass Go, do not let any other company collect $200...
