New Think my hard drive is failing
Last night around 10 my computer froze up, all sorts of nasty noises came from where the hard drive is located, then it resumed working. I plugged in an external firewire drive and started copying all my data files over as my backups are a little stale. During the course of the copying the system would occasionally freeze up and the drive would make more funky noises. Everything finally finished copying over sometime after midnight.

Guess I'll be heading to Fry's after working - I see a [link|http://shop4.outpost.com/product/4697788|500 GB SATA for $120].

New How old is the machine/drive?
Don't forget that for the price of a UPS economy "shipping", you might get a spare drive.

New almost 3 years
I've got a spare 250GB drive, it's what I back up my data to.

Picking the drive up locally means I can start the rebuild tonight.

New Right, but don't forget to...
RMA the drive. Its a free replacement and I know I can *always* use a spare drive, for just such an emergency as you've just been having. Plus, you might find a colorful use for it somewhere else.

Yeah, I know. But if you don't want to, at least send it in, in *MY* name and address, so it'll be sent to me. :)

New Back up and running
Monday night I tried using SilverKeeper to see if I could take a shortcut in setting up the 500 GB drive. No go, 20K of files didn't make the transition, resulting in a drive that wouldn't boot.

Last night I installed 10.4 on the new drive, did all the updates and began to restore my data. I have iTunes, Mail, iPhoto and a few other things recovered so far with no loss of data. A few applications would show a blank icon on the old drive, and trying to copy those was futile. No biggie, I either have the original disks or can download them again. I found [link|http://www.procata.com/blog/archives/2007/02/16/how-to-transfer-mac-os-x-application-data-between-computers/\n|this site] to have some helpful tips in getting the data back to the right places.
