I can't figure out what conditions are triggering it so I'm trying to post this as quickly as possible before I lose my session again. gdm keeps restarting. If I launch Firefox, use 'less' to view the syslog, or just wait long enough gdm restarts. When it happens, I can't switch to one of the lower terminals (TTY2-6) to work on it, I have to log in.

Last few lines in the syslog before it restarts are talking about gconf trying to load defaults, and cron.hourly trying to fire. Anyone heard of this I'd appreciate a pointer.

I've seen a couple of threads saying the behavior started with recent xorg updates, but none of the suggestions there worked.

It looks to me like every time an application tries to save state is when it breaks. ie: Move or resize a window and gdm restarts. Then I can't use that app any more. For instance Galeon is still working, but I'm afraid to resize it. Firefox hasn't worked since the first time I maximized it after the upgrade.

Guess I'll keep researching and trying things. I really don't want to un/re-install X and Gnome to fix this.
