Welcome to IWETHEY!

New PPP dialup problem with Edgy Eft.
I've set my Dad up on an Ubuntu Linux machine. Most everything has gone smoothly and he's starting to understand file handling. The dial-up for his internet works and the printer prints. But the actual dialling up has a problem: Sometimes it can't open /dev/modem.

I'm using a dialler I found in Synaptic called gnome-ppp. I was a bit surprised there was nothing in the default install that could do that, so I found that. When it works, it works well. But about a third of the time, it can't open /dev/modem or simply fails to even dial at all.

Ideas? Thoughts? I'm going to go now and hopefully it will fail so I can see if /dev/modem even exists.

Wade.

New Found the problem(s).
It appears that gnome-ppp needs some... polish. It turns out that the functionality of the 'Remember password' option is broken in that it doesn't (or can't) actually pass the entered password to wvdial when said option is not checked. There's a bug already filed, so hopefully now the program's author will go find a fix.
