Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Well, someone upgraded my machine to etch . . .
. . which doesn't have that included (according to post above), and I'm not set up to recompile the kernel to support that yet (you need the user space filesystem support) so that would take some time. I may try it if nothing else works.

New Well, do you use Debian Kernels?
Are you using 2.6.18-4-*?

If so, you only need to install the fuse tools and the dev stuff for it.

Then do a quick compile of it.

Then anyone in the group "fuse" should be able to mount it.

No kernel compile needed.

modprobe -l | grep fuse\n/lib/modules/2.6.18-4-k7/kernel/fs/fuse/fuse.ko

That is all that is needed, the fuse stuff is good to go, just the ntfs-3g stuff was removed.

You could always run sid, ntfs-3g is still in there.

New Did you try taking ownership of the folders?
In theory, as the administrator, you should be able to go into the security properties under Win2k, right click on the folder, Properties, Security tab, Advanced button, Owner, then check "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" and select a user to own all the folders - preferably the administrator. Apply the changes, jump back to the Permissions tab, make sure that the Administrators group has full permissions, then check "Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects", click okay, and cross your fingers.

It's quite possible you've already done this, just my idea of a last gasp.

New Cool.
Perfect example of "shit I care not about, at all, ever". ;-)

/me now ducks the thrown objects from people who have to care about this crap... ;-)

New Ditto likewise.
The only time I want to have to support Windows is on my *own* machine if I *choose* to run it for some reason.

New Yes, including as Administrator in Safe Mode . . .
. . no luck.

New I assume you tried something like this, then.
[link|http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic8914.html|TechSpot]. The thread has pointers to MS KB articles.

Just in case...

Good luck. I think you'll need it. :-(

Cheers,
Scott.
New Yeah, I read that article.
When I click on properties of a folder I need to take ownership of the security tab doesn't even appear. It only appears on folders that aren't a problem.

Yes, I did try starting at the parent folder and selecting to propagate to subfolers. All I get is "not accessible" errors on any such subfolers.

Yes I ran scandisk (from the desktop and from the repair console).

Either Vista has changed something or this filesystem is munged beyond hope of recovery.

Incidentally, I sometimes get "Folder not accessible, may have been moved or deleted" errors as well as "Access Denied" - but what does that mean? Even Bill Gates admitted Windows error messages are next to meaningless.

New This may help you
Rescue CD that claims latest Windows file system.

New Well, it saved a lot of time setting up NTFS-3g . . .
. . but no luck. The "\\Documents and Settings" structure is still empty and the critical directories in the "\\Users" structure still show 0 files. Files cannot be created in or copied to those directories.

I read the NTFS-3g FAQ and found no reference to not being able to see any files that were actually there - so I suspect the filesystem on this disk is just munged beyond hope.

New So you gonna set her up with...
OS/2 or Linux?

New Are you kidding?
Set up a teenage girl with something other than what's in fashion with her pals? She'd be ridiculed, ostracized, banished and banned - and talked about in hushed tones behind her back. She'd be deeply scarred for life (and might actually amount to something) - no, I can't take that responsibility.

New Could LRPD-ate the whole thing but ...
I'll take this part:
