New Anyone got experience with security cameras?
For the third year in a row we've had some vandalism down at the beach club. We're thinking about putting in some security cameras. The one thing I can't find in the research I'm doing is anything about the viewing range of the cameras. Some of them will say you can identify a face -- and I think "Well shouldn't they all, or what's the point? -- but none of them say how close to the camera someone would need to be to get the face.

We've got two ways in. One is fairly constrained, so one camera could easily get anyone coming down that way. The other way in is the frontage on the beach. We're pretty sure kids have come down the beach and in the back way. Considering how wide the beach is, and how wide the frontage is, there's really no one spot I could point to and know I'll get a face. So what I think I need is something with a wide field of view and fairly high resolution so I can zoom in on one spot.

Does anyone have first-hand experience, or a source they can point me to that talks about the resolution of different systems?

New Dunno if it's close enough to your needs.
We've got an [link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/content/show?contentid=268433|Axis 207W]. We monitor a bedroom with it and its fine for that. The ability to pick out features is going to depend on the lighting, the sharpness of the lens, and the resolution of the sensor. The 207W has an auto-aperture feature to adjust the exposure, but I wouldn't call it a high-resolution system by any means.

Your best bet is probably to put up a couple of cheap cameras out in the open with lots of signs and realize that most hoodlums won't stop to consider that it won't really be able to capture enough detail to uniquely identify their faces. Coats, shirts, general sizes, etc., is probably enough for at least a circumstantial ID.

Based on the quality of bank video shown on TV, I don't think you'll get what you want for a reasonable price just yet.

HTH a bit. Good luck.

Cheers,
Scott.
New That's what I'm afraid of

True. But I'm always seeing on TV shows that they can take that grainy stuff and "enhance" it until you can tell how many hours it's been since the guy shaved. TV wouldn't lie to us, would it?

I'm looking at something more like [link|http://www.homesecuritystore.com/ezStore123/DTProductZoom.asp?productID=1400|this]. I need something that will record through the night so we can play back if anything happened. I'd prefer wireless, but we'll probably have to run power to wherever we mount them anyway. And weatherproof is much more important anyway. At least one of these cameras will be right at the edge of Lake Erie. Not the most hospitable place to spend a winter.

New Why don't you
just hack into the satellites, you know, the ones that can read your newspaper, and reporgram them to keep watch for you.

I done saw it on TV, so it must be true. ;-)

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. (Herm Albright)
New Re: Anyone got experience with security cameras?
we got some here
the thing is if they are monitored in real time you can get an impressive zoom
read license plates from a few hundred feet
but on unattended scan things are different

my advice

call a few local vendors
they'll be eager to give you the tour
ask many questions

New Yeah, probably will do that
This seems to be one of those things where they want to do the "high touch" sales bit. Won't give you enough data to research it on your own. Which pretty much guarantees it's going to be $large for a decent system.

New You can look online for an idea of pricing
but remember when you're talking PTZ (pan/tilt/zoom) IP (Ethernet) camera you're getting quite a bit, too. And industrial quality (tough exterior for outdoors) adds more, too.

IIRC, staring prices for Japanese PTZ (Hitachi, Sony, etc) with say 16x zoom is $1000.

New Not looking for PTZ
This would not be actively monitored. It's strictly to watch a few approach points at night and record anyone who shows up.

New WiFi outdoors no-PTZ should be <$500
New Add 3 more cameras and a DVR and $600 sounds ~right
