New Medieval Mayhem
I'm [link|http://www.atariage.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=842|published] :)

I added a [link|http://www.spiceware.org/atari.html|page] to my site about it. There's additional info in my [link|http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?automodule=blog&blogid=148&|development blog] and the [link|http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=85667|thread] in the homebrew discussion forum.

Also made a [link|http://www.spiceware.org/downloads/MedievalMayhem.mov|video](17 MB). The capture software made the paddle readings(green player) a bit jittery, the other 3 are AI.

Edit: new [link|http://www.spiceware.org/downloads/MedievalMayhem1round.mov|smaller video](3.2 MB) that only shows 1 round of play. Prior video shows 3 rounds.

... you suck, dood.

Still, very cool.

New Thanks!
The AIs are good, but the video capture software messing with paddle readings is the biggest issue I had while making the video.

After seeing the first video, Al asked for a shorter video to include with the store entry at Atari Age. I wanted to include both the dragon and the knight sequences, quickest way to do that is kill 1 AI player then kill yourself.

Over 64 copies sold as of January 5th. Al recently moved from Austin to somewhere in Ohio so I don't have more current sales info.

I just noticed the poll of the week over at Atari Age - [link|http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=104673|2600 Homebrew of the Year 2006]

Not too shabby - Medieval Mayhem's #2 behind Lady Bug. Lady Bug's [link|http://www.atariage.com/store/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=21_85|#4 in the bestsellers](right hand column) for Atari Age. It's been available 7 months vs Medieval Mayhem's 3 months.

Nice comments too:

Lady Bug is my favorite singleplayer game of the year, and Medieval Mayhem is my favorite multiplayer game of the year, and is the best homebrew paddle game to date (surpassing my previous favorite, Marble Craze).
johnnywc (author of Lady Bug)
Medieval Mayhem is awesome - almost hard to believe it's running on a 2600. I wish I was able to play the game with my 3 brothers like with Warlords & the good ol' days (hopefully next Christmas).

There's also [link|http://www.atariage.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_reviews&cPath=21_85_24&products_id=842&number_of_uploads=0|1 review] online so far - 5 joysticks out of 5. Not a very in-depth review, but nice nonetheless :-)

Atari Times [link|http://ataritimes.com/rankings.php?System=2600|2600 Game Rankings] currently has Medieval Mayhem at #2 as well. It has 5 votes averaging 98%; just behind Ladybug with 9 votes, also averaging 98%.

New Ah, Warlords
or more specifically, Warlords II. It runs like a champ under warp, and it's one of the major reasons I have a warp partition here because it doesn't run under XP.

I assume you're referring to this [link|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warlords_(game_series)|Warlords II](there's a fix mentioned to make it run under XP)?

New Holy crap
they had that cocktail one down at thirteen acres where I hung out as a pfy in the early eighties.
New You may be able to try mine out under OS/2
Nab the [link|http://www.spiceware.org/downloads/MedievalMayhemNTSC.bin|ROM] off my site then use Stella.

Sadly [link|http://home.houston.rr.com/spiceware/stella.html|my port of Stella] doesn't know how to handle F4 (32K) Atari games - only F4SC (32K + extra RAM) as there weren't any known 32K games w/extra RAM back in 2000 :-(

There's a newer [link|http://smedley.info/os2ports/index.html|SDL port here] that runs my game but has issues that I suspect are because I'm running OS/2 via Parallels on my Macbook. Audio doesn't work correctly and the game speed is inconsistant, speeding up and slowing down. This port of Stella doesn't know about my game so you'll have to change a few settings, especially "use paddles" or Stella will think a joystick is plugged in.
1. start Stella
2. load Medieval Mayhem
3. hit TAB, a menu will pop up
4. select Game Properties
5. on the CARTRIDGE tab set SOUND to STEREO
6. select the CONTROLLER tab
7. change both controllers to PADDLES
8. hit OK
9. hit EXIT MENU
10. restart the emulator for the change to take effect. Under OS X use APPLE R, under Windows and Linux use CONTROL R. You'll get a message "New Console Created" when it restarts.

Once you've done this, Stella will remember the settings if you play the game again later. However, you'll have to do it again if you download a new build.

I also had a problem with the new version Stella were I couldn't control the in-game-menu if I switched it to full screen mode - and after switching it to full screen mode it would always start up in full screen mode. I was able to switch back to windowed by starting it via command line using:
stella -fullscreen 0

"Chicago to my mind was the only place to be. ... I above all liked the city because it was filled with people all a-bustle, and the clatter of hooves and carriages, and with delivery wagons and drays and peddlers and the boom and clank of freight trains. And when those black clouds came sailing in from the west, pouring thunderstorms upon us so that you couldn't hear the cries or curses of humankind, I liked that best of all. Chicago could stand up to the worst God had to offer. I understood why it was built--a place for trade, of course, with railroads and ships and so on, but mostly to give all of us a magnitude of defiance that is not provided by one house on the plains. And the plains is where those storms come from." -- E.L. Doctorow

New 8.6 / 10
[link|http://www.planet-atari.de/?article=5456&name=Medieval_Mayhem|Medieval Mayhem Review] - here's the summary of it:

My German's a bit rusty, so I hit up babelfish for:
A true obligation purchase for the Atari 2600: Apart from the exciting duels against three computer opponents the true play passport unfolds only with a fight against three human players. By numerous meaningful options and a diagram marvelous for VCS of conditions one will be able to also still inspire so some XBox and PlayStationzocker for it. Only and alone the fact which one for the play Atari Paddles is necessary something making more difficult and also an adjustable degree of difficulty for the AI one misses. Slam shut, and that is an instruction!

Cybergoth posted a better translation of the XBox/Playstion line in my [link|http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?automodule=blog&blogid=148&|blog]:
By lots of well thought options and for VCS means fabulous graphics should it even manage to get some XBox and PlayStation fanatics into it.

Graphics 8
Sound 8
Gameplay 9
Multiplayer 10

Final Score 8.6

Not bad - I checked over their [link|http://www.planet-atari.de/?p=article&platform=Atari%20VCS%202600|review summary] and 8.6 puts Medieval Mayhem at 9th out of 50.

Medieval Mayhem Review
Atari VCS 2600 (Author: Michael)

Nowadays one associates "Party fun" with Singstar or perhaps Mario Party. Back in the day more than twenty years ago things were different. Usually you were happy just to be able to play a game together with a friend. Warlords was a veritable fun-bomb with its four-player mode, although it had been heavily slimmed-down in the graphics department. Thanks to SpiceWare this has now been corrected, let's see how it turned out.

Whoever thinks this is a simple hack is way off: The game has been re-programmed and therefore [artistically] re-interpreted from the ground up, and the effort has definitely paid off. The 32KByte Module contains everything a player's heart desires. To begin with one chooses the various game options one wants to fight with from the start menu. Here one decides, among other things, how many players there are and in which corners they are situated. Besides the number of fireballs to appear in the game, their speed is also set here.

[Graphic 1] [Graphic 2]

A new addition is the possibility to decide whether a fireball can be caught by the player or computer opponent. In the game this is done so that when you press a button [key?], the fireball sticks to the game character [= "sprite"?] and thereafter when you release it, it shoots away. This adds a tactical note to the flow of the game [or just "gameplay"?]. There's something here for everyone: Four different difficulty levels ensure that everybody should find challenge they need.

[Graphic 3] [Graphic 4]

The animation[s] in the game, which were developed by David Vazquez, who also did the artwork for the game, are exceptional. For instance, the first fireball of the game doesn't just show up [out of nowhere], but is brought into play by a large fire-spewing dragon. And after a win, the victorious player's knight runs across the screen and is celebrated. As expected, the four-player mode leaves no wish unfulfilled, and should even today be able to attract quite a few players to the console.

[Graphic 5 ("Michael thinks:")]

A true Must-Buy for the Atari 2600: Besides the exciting duels against three computer opponents, the true joy of the game only appears in a fight against three human players. With its many sensible options, and graphics that are fabulous in the context of the VCS, this game should attract quite a few XBox and PlayStation gamers. The only minus is the fact that you need Atari Paddles to play the game (and it would also be nice if the AI's rate of difficulty could be adjusted). Buy it now, and that's an order!

Positive Negative\n* Gaming fun for up * Unfortunately playable\n to four players only with paddles\n* Lots of options\n* Very good animations\n (dragon, knight)\n\nDeveloper: [link|http://www.spiceware.org|SpiceWare]\nDistributor: [link|http://www.atariage.com|AtariAge]\nGenre: Action\nOnline functionality: No\nRegional code: PAL\nNumber of players: 1 - 4\nLanguage: English\nAvailability: November 29 2006\n\nGraphics 8 Total\nSound 8\nGameplay 9 8.6 [Graphic 6 (Sphere)]\nMultiplayer 10

It's 22nd out of 162 on their [link|http://www.planet-atari.de/?p=article&platform=&wertung=1|listing by score], but that means it could be 20th or 21st -- it just happens to come alphabetically after Asteroids and Chip's Challenge, which have the same total score.

New Thanks!
That clarifies a few things for me that were confusing in the Babel Fish translation.

AI's rate of difficulty could be adjusted
The AI is changeable - but it's tied to the ball speed. I didn't have any bits of RAM left to make it separate. Yep, bits - with only 128 bytes of RAM ever bit counts :)

Positive Negative\n* Gaming fun for up * Unfortunately playable\nto four players only with paddles

That part's a bit odd - the only way to have a concurrent four player game on the 2600 is with paddles.

It's 22nd out of 162 on their listing by score

I should have clarified - I was looking at the [link|http://www.planet-atari.de/?p=article&platform=Atari%20VCS%202600&wertung=1|2600 listing by score]

New Atari Times review - No translation needed
[link|http://www.ataritimes.com/article.php?showarticle=576|History Repeats Itself, in a good way.]
Anyone who remembers Warlords for the Atari 2600 will most likely, if not for it's name, recognize Medieval Mayhem as the answer to all that was missing in atari's earlier home release. After so many years, someone finally has taken the time and done a great job at addressing what was left out of the first game as compared to the arcade, which I'll get to shortly.

Although most would call this new homebrew a warlords sequel, I perfer to see it as Warlords "done right".
Not to say Atari's Warlords was terrible; considering the limitations back then, it was actually a very decent port preserving the basic elements of the arcade with additional unique features added.
However, according to how faithful the later Medieval Mayhem is to the arcade Warlords, it boasts even more features that put it in a league of it's own.

Score Summary:
Graphics 95%
Sound/Music 100%
Gameplay 98%
Control 100%
Overall Score 100%(scores are rounded to the nearest 5%)

I've jumped to #1 in their [link|http://ataritimes.com/rankings.php?System=2600|2600 Game Rankings](currently 99% with 8 scores) and #8 in sales at the [link|http://www.atariage.com/store/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=21_85_24|Atari Age Store].
