Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Ah. How about if one renames them to *.RTF? :-)
New What if it really /is/ a .DOC?
Dunno. Haven't got a Vista install to play with at the moment.

New That's the one I'm wondering about, yes.
The other not-too-unusual case, where it really /is/ an .RTF that just happens to be /named/ .DOC, those it really oughta open, IMO. If it doesn't do that, then I'd take that fact as proof that this was /not/ about security, but deliberate crippling in order to enhance sales.

(And yeah, yeah, people may point to the free[-as-in-beer] Word Viewer all they want -- but when one program is replaced by two like this, I don't think that's for the /customers'/ convenience. Does that Viewer thingy even come with Vista? For free? With all eleventy-seven editions?)

New Might install Vista tonight and find out.
Hurrah for Parallels.

I'm going to delete Solaris 10 and OpenSuSE 10.2. I've discovered what I want to know about both of them. (They're inscrutable and still crap, respectively).

Watch this space. I've also got Office 2007 Beta kicking around, so will install that, too.

New OK. The answer. (210KB & 160KB img)
Same source file, two formats, three filenames.

Definitive answer? Wordpad on Vista does not open Word .DOC files.

Left to right: .DOC, RTF, RTF with .DOC extension.

Just to prove the point (notice how the .DOC version is wrapped differently to the RTF version):
