David Allen: Getting Things Done - * * * * /5
This [link|http://www.amazon.com/Getting-Things-Done-Stress-Free-Productivity/dp/0142000280|book] is an easy to read discussion of a system to get control over the things you need to do in your life (at work and home) and get them done. In contrast to several other systems out there, this one seems to be based on common-sense and it doesn't require fancy software or regimented routines. It basically boils down to keeping track of everything that you normally carry around in your head on lists and in folders (so that you have time to think about things and make reasoned decisions about what you should do).
It sounds like a good system. I'm going to give it a shot.
It loses a star because it's a little too repetitive at times.
Cheers, Scott.

Some of us do.
Yeah, doing things is a matter of doing them. Trouble is, life isn't linear. Hell, it's not even planar!
The book does have a lot of common-sense stuff in it, but that's part of the beauty of it.
Cheers, Scott.

avoiding flailing on the stuff you decide to do is key
GTD has some useful ideas for keeping plans and "next actions" organized in a way that cuts out a lot of overhead.
There's a set of interviews with Allen available (in podcast form) at [link|http://www.43folders.com/|http://www.43folders.com/]
Worth a listen once you've read enough of the book to get a handle on his system.

Isn't that the very definition of "flailing"?
waiting until the very last minute to do something that you know needs to get done?

"Chicago to my mind was the only place to be. ... I above all liked the city because it was filled with people all a-bustle, and the clatter of hooves and carriages, and with delivery wagons and drays and peddlers and the boom and clank of freight trains. And when those black clouds came sailing in from the west, pouring thunderstorms upon us so that you couldn't hear the cries or curses of humankind, I liked that best of all. Chicago could stand up to the worst God had to offer. I understood why it was built--a place for trade, of course, with railroads and ships and so on, but mostly to give all of us a magnitude of defiance that is not provided by one house on the plains. And the plains is where those storms come from." -- E.L. Doctorow
