New GDS work-alike for Linux?
One thing I really miss for my T41 laptop installation of Kubuntu is [link|http://desktop.google.com/|Google Desktop]. Is there a application for KDE or Gnome that is nominally similar? I'm most interested in the local search functions; I understand that many applets similar to Google's already exist.

I've looked around [link|http://kde-apps.org/|KDE-Apps] and [link|http://www.gnomefiles.org/index.php|GnomeFiles], but nothing's jumping out at me.

Thanks.

Cheers,
Scott.
New umm, yeah.

Sorry nothing in Debian for KDE yet, though there are things creeping into the light:

In Kubuntu, you might try apt-cache search google, to come up with somethings that are in (K)Ubuntu and not Debian.

New KAT looks neat, but it seems to be dead as a project. :-(
Thanks for all the pointers. I'll check them out when I'm done raking leaves today...

Cheers,
Scott.
New Re: GDS work-alike for Linux?

You might not get all the neato system-tray integration and stuff it does under GNOME, but Beagle should do the trick. And its interface is pretty darned nice.

New Thanks.
I'd seen mention of it before, but it was dated 2005. I see that [link|http://beagle-project.org/Main_Page|0.2.13 was released less than a week ago], so I'll check into it more carefully (though the Mono-aspect does make me a little nervous (tied as it is to MS)).

Thanks.

And post more often! We need to see programming arguments more often around here! :-)

Cheers,
Scott.
New Mono

I was curious about it and picked up C# a while back, and so far I haven't seen anything to get worried about. The Mono guys are working on compatibility layers to run stuff written for Windows/.NET APIs, but most of the interesting stuff in the Linux world doesn't use any of that (instead it uses bindings for GTK and other Free libraries).

How depressing. Brain the size of a planet, and they have me opening doors.
