New Tim Berners Lee admits XHTML is a failure
[link|http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20061029-8101.html|http://arstechnica.c...0061029-8101.html]

Citing limited adoption of XHTML, Internet innovator and World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) ringleader Tim Berners-Lee says HTML must be reinvented through a process of incremental change that will build on the existing standard.

Berners-Lee's statements are, in general, a response to the stagnation of the HTML standard, the growing demand for rich web applications, the activities of the Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group (WHATWG), and concerns voiced by dissatisfied former W3C participants like Bjoern Hoehrmann. Berners-Lee hopes to establish a new working group that will focus on revising and improving the HTML standard while working to bridge the gap between HTML and XHTML. According to Berners-Lee, the W3C has "strong support for this group" from numerous stakeholders, "including browser makers." Berners-Lee also discusses plans for Web Forms, a new standard that will fall somewhere between HTML's form support, and W3C's own XForms standard.

About damn time.

New This happened before.
Anyone remember HTML 2? It was a bit too ambitious a jump from what passed for HTML 1. HTML 3 was technically downgrade to something achievable.

"Don't give up!"
New Serious question: is this actually important?
As a web user (I dabble with HTML to the point where I can get my img tags in order and have a very, very tenuous grasp of CSS) rather than a web developer, is this going to prove deleterious to my webulatory experience?

New It will be
Web development is stalled. Browsers are too complicated so adding new feature to them is a pain. Mostly they've been stalled waiting for people to move to xhtml. Supporting xhtml is eatin lots of cycles for a few and resulting in no gain. Almost nobody is doing it and the constraints don't fit the web very well.

So the web is in a frozen state of indecision. This should let us cut our losses and advance web technology in a pragmatic way.

New Means my investment will finally payoff...
...as it will, at long last, allow me to transfer the money from Nigerian bank accounts.

Personally, I'd settle for them making tables first class in the dom, and adding a couple of new form types (combobox, menu, popup menus, etc...)
New But tables are evil!
Oh, except for when you have actual tabular data to present, which is fairly often, so maybe they should (like you said) make them first class. Oh, and if you want me to stop using tables for layout, lets add some selectors that allow us to control the vertical size of divs.

New You mean like this?
[link|http://www.topxml.com/css/css_property_height.asp|http://www.topxml.co...operty_height.asp]

The height property (CSS Reference)

Introduction

The height property can be used to set the height of the element. This can be an image, a text, or any other element. If you have set the height of an element then you should also set the width or at least you should not set it to auto. If you do so, the element will be scaled automatically to a proportional value.

New Not quite
[link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/content/show?contentid=185102|http://z.iwethey.org...?contentid=185102]

What I need (want) is a way to say, "Make this div the same hight as the one next to it." But that violates the principal that a div is a self-contained entity. And it also sucks that a div can't auto-resize to accommodate the widest element within it. Everything will clip or overflow.

New I don't think you have ever violated a principal.
Who would that be, the one of your own high school? Or [link|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seymour_Skinner|Seymour Skinner]?

Now, violating a principle, on the other hand, that's something we all do now and then.
