What should the permissions be?

New On mine, they are...
Desktop: 0700
Desktop contents: 0644
Everything owned by my user and primary group.
New Doh! It was the group
On the old system, the group was 'users'. That group doesn't exist on the new one.

Well, I'm assuming that will fix it. I'll know next time I reboot.

Going to whack the .gnome* stuffs again, see what happens. This is teh suxxorz.

"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

New This one is ancient but...
The symptoms read similar. No clue what's left of that preferences panel following the adoption of "sane defaults" (using KDE over here) so some digging may be in order.

New Recently...
There was an update to gnome-<something> that basically made setups bad ... but if you were to re-update again... it might just fix it.

And BTW, did you turn off nautilus for managing the Desktop? If you did, that is what nix'd it.

New Well ...
I whacked the .gnome* stuffs, and I have desktop again. It's only mildly annoying at this point. The one that bugs me is the trash icon has no "Empty trash" option on the context menu. The only tips I can find for fixing that are KDE-ish.

New For some reason...
I believe you are missing some packages that are needed for GNOME.

Do you have "fam" installed?

I dunno... seems like Mike hit the nail squarely on the head.

New Yup. Looks scary.
Is a reinstall or dist-upgrade or something in order? It looks like it thinks gnome shouldn't be there...

Good luck!

Cheers,
Scott.

New Try an apt-get -f install.
Sounds like you need the apt database to be put back in sync with itself.

Wade.
"Don't give up!"
New It is one of the few things
apt just doesn't do right.

Just install gdm as well.

To me these things are very clear.

gamin and fam conflict.

gamin is the preferred one right now.

apt-get install gnome-desktop-environment gnome-audio gdm

They are both File and directory monitors.

Then don't install gnome-audio.

apt-get -f only fixes things if they aren't installed (like power goes out during an upgrade)

You seem to be just glazing over here Drew. Read the descriptions. The if the Gnomes Destop Environment is the only thing beng installed (it is a meta package) you may not need it. But try to get it installed. gdm is the Gnome Dektop Manager (login screen thinger)
