New No Nuke?
at 11:28 AM ET, Drudge had this (no link on his site)

Sample taken after North Korea's announced nuclear test showed no presence of radioactive particles...

this is what calmer folks have been saying all along

another 'crisis' for the Bush 'administration' ????

New My guess
The "leadership" of these "Axis of Evul" countries (specifically N. Korea and Iran) are rather sequestered in their world view...by their own hand, of course, but that's not important. What is important is that they can see the adventurism exhibited by their arch-nemesis, the USofA. They also see that we (the US) are quite extended, perhaps overly so. So they would like to see just how over-extended we really are.

To do that, they manufacture a crisis. Now, there's no way for us to know whether they really have nuclear capability, but If they can get us to think they do, then they have a lever that they can use to get what they want. After all, they know are scared to death of nukes, and cringe at the possibility of losing even one American life to the hands of an auslander (while they themselves have no such compunctions about their own inmates citizens).

So they create this "crisis" and see just exactly how we react. Then they can guage their response, and future directions, based on that response.

The thing is, because the US is in a weakened state, such tweaking of the bear is possible. If the US weren't tied down wasting its treasury in a blood feud in Iraq, and in making a textbook on how not to execute a manhunt in Afghanistan, now way in hell Kim even thinks about a "nuclear test"!

New clear misundestanding of the Korean issues
NK has been actively seeking nukes since the 1950's
they have the plutonium
until recently the technology on how to build a plutonium nuke was well published in detail
the machining needed is very precise, they havnt been able to perfect the technology
they have a totally enclosed political system
the only motives of the NK leadership is survival as the heads of their system
they have zero incentive to not build and use nukes
the only glimmer of hope is the chinese centrist group of the NK cliques
there is constant jockeying of position at the top echelons, think lord of the flies crossed with the mafia for the worlds 5th largest military force.
these people are not stupid
their main exports are conterfeit money, meth, and missile technology
what part of dangerous dont you understand?
thanx,
bill

New It's like you say, bill, these people are not stupid
And given the history you well documented, they are world renoun opportunists as well. And they sure know hwo to recognize an oppoetunity, don't they?

New Well, thus far these are all guesses, even at the top
Given that Mr. Il is only slightly more delusional (both about his cleverness and his prospects for creating a lasting dynasty) than the spawn of Roveowitz and the rest of the PNAC crackheads -- this dance is apt to continue indefinitely.

As for the implosion device and the possibility (likelihood) that this was about a fizzle -- deductions from the exact isotopic concentrations detected (plus time, location of samples and a bunch more data they'd better have gleaned) -- I doubt that we unwashed shall ever hear those results / as in Classified / as in the secrecy of this regime plus just plain standard military considerations.

ie. we aren't going to see these actual results - less'n Russ, Chinese see some utility in revealing more details from their samples. Cui bono?

As to Box's
until recently the technology on how to build a plutonium nuke was well published in detail.
As I've mentioned elsewhere: nope. Indeed the principles are long comprehended and the role of many details of the feature-set [like what a 'tamper' is; what FFF means] have been described.

But the myriad crucial details {fortunately} are not 'out there' - and I've paid attention to these recipes since the first. No proofs for negatives - but US/USSR-grade refinements likely remain unsold to highest bidder. Still, only a maniac believes the Super is necessary; that is about big cities, all-at-once.
Oh. Wait. So then: Putin + US remain the elder maniacs.

Also opined - I'm glad this megalomaniac narcissist is forced to solve the implosion riddle, rather than having piles of U235. The downside is: if he does solve that difficult chain of perfection - he gets also a useable trigger for a Super, which would not be the case with a gun-type configuration {implosion is the Necessary scheme.}

Oh what a mangled web we ... when first we practice to annihilate all life. For peace.

New FFF means ...
Fortefortissimo!

Nothing classified about that (if it were Handel would have been labelled a traitor!).

New No, that's
fission-fusion-(then more = Lots of)-fission

ie. a whole lot of joules cross-pollinating a plasma for just a few more nSecs - prior to vaporizing the rather dense container shell. Kinda sorta like.. recursion. And ya gets to use natural or low-enrichment U for much of the Insane yield.

New Nuke "confirmed"
