"My Name Is Earl"
My wife brought home the first season DVD last night. We stayed up till midnight watching it straight through; it sucked me in good!
The premise is unusual - basic fuck-up guy wins the lottery, gets hit by a car 10 seconds later and loses the winning ticket. Spends 2 months in the hospital, gets inspiration from Carson Daly about getting his karma back in order, so after getting out of the hospital pledges to correct all the bad things he did in his life and writes it all down on a list. Every episode is him trying to correct a bad act on the list by doing something good for the affected person so he can cross it off.
It's not a situation comedy, but there's plenty of off-the-wall humor. The main character and his brother are perfectly cast with two unknown actors doing great trailer-trash persons with gold hearts but not too much brains.
I give it 4 stars!

"Chicago to my mind was the only place to be. ... I above all liked the city because it was filled with people all a-bustle, and the clatter of hooves and carriages, and with delivery wagons and drays and peddlers and the boom and clank of freight trains. And when those black clouds came sailing in from the west, pouring thunderstorms upon us so that you couldn't hear the cries or curses of humankind, I liked that best of all. Chicago could stand up to the worst God had to offer. I understood why it was built--a place for trade, of course, with railroads and ships and so on, but mostly to give all of us a magnitude of defiance that is not provided by one house on the plains. And the plains is where those storms come from." -- E.L. Doctorow
