Welcome to IWETHEY!

New It neither confirms or refutes my assumption
in fact, it isn't even mentioned at all.

Still hoping for something solid either way.

"Chicago to my mind was the only place to be. ... I above all liked the city because it was filled with people all a-bustle, and the clatter of hooves and carriages, and with delivery wagons and drays and peddlers and the boom and clank of freight trains. And when those black clouds came sailing in from the west, pouring thunderstorms upon us so that you couldn't hear the cries or curses of humankind, I liked that best of all. Chicago could stand up to the worst God had to offer. I understood why it was built--a place for trade, of course, with railroads and ships and so on, but mostly to give all of us a magnitude of defiance that is not provided by one house on the plains. And the plains is where those storms come from." -- E.L. Doctorow

New Based upon that
I'm leaning towards having to say that my assumption was wrong.

New I had heard early on...
...(and thus looked into it a bit more) that the methods used to investigate this would not have been allowed under current US law.

New Which means we're already using them!

"So don't pay attention to the approval ratings that say 68% of Americans disapprove of the job this man is doing. I ask you this, does that not also logically mean that 68% approve of the job he's not doing? Think about it. I haven't."
Stephen Colbert, at the White House Correspondent's Dinner 29Apr06

New Actually, what it means...
...and I'm sure there are other examples...is that we are facilitating the violation of wiretap rules for UK authorities (and likely more than just UK).

We are already using that wiretap capability in the US...and there has been much todo about our use of it on domestic phone lines.

Its a new and "interesting" use of intel resources to supplement the police force for our allies.

New echelon taps
Any opinions expressed by me are mine alone, posted from my home computer, on my own time as a free american and do not reflect the opinions of any person or company that I have had professional relations with in the past 50 years. meep
New IOW, this is hardly new
What I've read is that the various intel forces have had a mutual back scratch agreement to circumvent rules on domestic spying for decades.

New Whatever they're using on your side...
[link|http://news.bostonherald.com/editorial/view.bg?articleid=155834&srvc=home|it doesn't seem to be very effective either]...

Of the completed cases:
- 64% weren't worth prosecuting
- 9% were dismissed or acquitted

And out of 1329 convictions, 704 did no time and the median for 327 others was 28 days. Only 81 got over 5 years.

Ouch...

Given that you get 60-90 days for [link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/content/show?contentid=266663|dumpster diving], one may wonder what those 1031 really were convicted for vs. arrested for :/
