New I am just a messenger
Let me explain: The Project Manager is responsible for the schedule. I am simply reporting on whether we are meeting the schedule or not. Now if you wanted me to speculate on delays, I might point out that the one resource assigned to a task on the critical path has been in a meeting with the PM all morning. So I suspect at the afternoon status meeting to report that we are, in fact, behind schedule. Then, maybe, someone -- meaning "not me", someone whose performance evaluation is more directly tied to deadline than quality, and who might that be? -- will have an idea for getting back on schedule. But I doubt it.
New :-/
New I'm curious where this is from....
but the project manager isn't responsible for keeping project on schedule. Project Management is primarily a communication job, responsible for getting estimates and dependencies from the teams and communicating these estimates and dependencies to management (who is responsible for the schedule and execution).

Frankly, the only time a person should show up on management's radar is if their in Critial Path and they're behind.
New PM is glorified detail person, auditor if you will
ensuring that every detail is tracked and the responsible folks warned on date slippage.
thanx,
bill

New You forgot to say "should be"
I usually see PMs getting leaned on to make schedule, and getting bonuses if they do. If the PM isn't responsible for schedule, who is? Serious question.

New PM is responsible to "lean" on the schedule
part of their job description. However they are not responsible for the schedule. The committed folks are. If the schedule slips its the fault of the item owner, not the PM and should be beaten. :-)
