Welcome to IWETHEY!

New I can explain that one... even though I'm not Shizzy
On the other hand: needs to gain more computer experience. is kind of odd.

Why?

Gaining computer experience covers a wide array of things. There's the technical aspect, there's the cultural aspect, there's the user-friendly aspect and there's the online community aspect.

I don't know which one she is seeking, but speaking for myself, I have gained computer knowledge regarding the following things by being a member of IWT:

Technical:
--How to use minimal html
--How to link to an avatar
--How to use blockquotes
--How to maneuver around a large site with actual divisions and multi-forums.

Cultural
--How to exist culturally on an online site with a diverse group of people
--Points of view from people around the world
--Lifestyles and customs from people around the world

User Friendly:
--Assistance and knowledge regarding a number of different software issues
--Assistance and knowledge regarding a number of different hardware things
--Answers to many other non-computer related questions

Online Community:
--The etiquette of the net
--How and when to post
--How to know when not to post
--The art of handling being flamed

There's probably a lot more, but these are the basics. :)

And in answer to this part:

Is computer experience a life skill, required for mere existance and personal growth? And if so, how does interaction with this group of people further that goal?

I have to say yes, in some ways. It has helped my personal growth to be a part of this community, to move beyond the basics of Yahoo to the more challenging aspects of a full blown site. As a result of being on IWT I can now handle a multi-forumed board on Y and R, for example.

For mere existence? Not really, not in the survival sense of the world. But to exist with many many many different people in the world, both online and off, I'd have to say yes. I learned a lot about co-existing on here, about how to live peacefully with many many types of people from all walks of life, all with their own set of entitled opinions, and I'm proud of that. I've grown a lot since being a member of this group.

Hope that answers your question.

Brenda
