Sure I can load vanilla xp, then update to get some drivers, then surf over to IBM and download and install (one at a time) the dozen or so utilities and TP specific drivers that are needed, or I can get the disks from IBM that take the machine back to original condition and run windows update once. Speed to fix will be considerably shorter the second way...and that is important to me. Too much of today's music is fashionable crap dressed as artistry._{Adrian Belew}

IBM had something called ThinkVantage that allowed rapid [link\|http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/think/thinkvantagetech/system_update.html\|system updates]. It's not like the OS/2 days where you had to download drivers and updates individually. Lenovo seems to have continued that program. So, yes, having the CDs with baseline drivers, etc., will be handy. But if you're in a hurry, you can probably get up and running quicker using a vanilla XP disk and using Windows Update and Lenovo's System Update (above). Good luck. Cheers, Scott.

Nor, as I play with this more and more, do I see a time where I will spend significant time in the XP environment. Haven't tested everything (cd burning, kvm setup)..but this is the first machine that I've had gnome on that didn't make me want to punch the screen because of memory issues and general hogginess. Still going to install xfce because I simply like it better. Have a new battery on order and looking on ebay for a slim dock extra to make this a 10-12 hour machine on batteries and I think I may be loving life. Remember that if you do decide to put XP on it, it's much easier to install Linux afterward. (XP may wipe out Grub and Linux no matter how careful you are.) That might affect your partitioning and backup decisions. Hang in there. You'll get over this hump. Cheers, Scott.

Wireless worked great once I configured my SSID and password. I was impressed with the bootup speed(off CD at that) so went ahead and installed it. Once it was installed I went to configure the wireless again, but the card isn't listed in the network control panel :-( Time for bed - I'll look into it tomorrow evening. Post #262,002 by SpiceWare 7/17/06 8:41:48 PM Reply	weird fix had to install [link\|http://packages.ubuntu.com/dapper/base/pcmcia-cs\|pcmcia-cs] even though pcmciautils replaces it for the 26.13-rc1 and higher kernel. When installing pcmcia-cs it even told me that I should use the newer one.
