New Warning to T class laptop users
There is a setting in the bios setup utility that covers access to the HD space allocated to system restore. There are 3 settings. Off, Normal and Secure. Default setting is to "Normal". However, this setting allows a partition program such as that supplied with Ubuntu to "see" the hidden partition and also to write to it. 2 issues. One, trying to partition the system with the program will fail (it sets the parameters incorrectly I suppose) and 2 it will write the bootloader to an inaccessable portion of the drive (so even a full install will fail with a Grub Error 18).

Changing this default setting to "Secure" at least fixes the Grub issue...I have to wait for the rescue disks to determine if that setting will fix what horked this lapper in the first place.

Anyway, this is posted from Ubuntu with built in wireless on a t40.

I'm not going to do too much to the system till the restore disks come and I can get XP back and go back to trying to make this a dual boot lapper.

New Re: Warning to T class laptop users
I'd be highly inclined to delete all partitions on the disk and start over with an installation of vanilla XP, then Ubuntu. Restore discs, feh!

Given that the partitioner is basically GNU parted, these horrors you've seen will happen with any !Windows operating system.

New Won't Winders Update grab all the latest versions?
New Ar.
And those it doesn't can be downloaded, I wot.

New Thats the bit.
Sure I can load vanilla xp, then update to get some drivers, then surf over to IBM and download and install (one at a time) the dozen or so utilities and TP specific drivers that are needed, or I can get the disks from IBM that take the machine back to original condition and run windows update once.

Speed to fix will be considerably shorter the second way...and that is important to me.

New I don't argue with the benefits of the CDs, but...
IBM had something called ThinkVantage that allowed rapid [link|http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/think/thinkvantagetech/system_update.html|system updates]. It's not like the OS/2 days where you had to download drivers and updates individually. Lenovo seems to have continued that program.

So, yes, having the CDs with baseline drivers, etc., will be handy. But if you're in a hurry, you can probably get up and running quicker using a vanilla XP disk and using Windows Update and Lenovo's System Update (above).

Good luck.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Sure thing.
Might make resale value a bit better though, having the disks. But I don't anticipate that as a need at the moment.

Nor, as I play with this more and more, do I see a time where I will spend significant time in the XP environment. Haven't tested everything (cd burning, kvm setup)..but this is the first machine that I've had gnome on that didn't make me want to punch the screen because of memory issues and general hogginess.

Still going to install xfce because I simply like it better.

Have a new battery on order and looking on ebay for a slim dock extra to make this a 10-12 hour machine on batteries and I think I may be loving life.

New You know about Xubuntu, right?
[link|http://www.xubuntu.org/|http://www.xubuntu.org/]

:-)

I haven't tried it myself.

Remember that if you do decide to put XP on it, it's much easier to install Linux afterward. (XP may wipe out Grub and Linux no matter how careful you are.) That might affect your partitioning and backup decisions.

Hang in there. You'll get over this hump.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Do it myself anyway.
Been using xfce for quite a while now since I traditionally have been using older machines with limited graphics capability. For the most part, I don't game, so high end cards are not something I generally care about nor have sitting around.

New That's disappointing
booted Xubuntu via live CD on my Thinkpad T22 with Lucent WaveLAN card. Wireless worked great once I configured my SSID and password.

I was impressed with the bootup speed(off CD at that) so went ahead and installed it. Once it was installed I went to configure the wireless again, but the card isn't listed in the network control panel :-(

Time for bed - I'll look into it tomorrow evening.

New weird fix
had to install [link|http://packages.ubuntu.com/dapper/base/pcmcia-cs|pcmcia-cs] even though pcmciautils replaces it for the 26.13-rc1 and higher kernel. When installing pcmcia-cs it even told me that I should use the newer one.
