New Virtual PC available for free download.

I'll pass, myself.

Cheers,
Scott.
New VMware Server 1.0 is available for free download as well

We're experimenting with that here at school.

Some of our courses use VPC to let students simulate multiple PC networks on their computers.

I'm looking for a more cross-platform alternative.

New Have you looked at parallels?
I think they're mostly known for their Intel-Mac product (which I use) but they also have Windows and Linux products.

New Looking at something for school

Most of our networking/programming classes use PCs with Windows. Our current virtualization solution is VPC and MS Virtual Server.

That being said, I tried VMWS today and was extremely impressed. I picked up both Linux and Windows versions plus enough serial #s so that my fellow instructors can mess around with it.

When and if I get a Macintel box (and so far they look highly droolworthy) I'd like to use Parallels.

New Parallels runs under Windows, Linux and OS X
I've been quite happy with it myself. It's not free, though you can get a demo key good for a couple weeks.

The host OS is free, takes up less disk space, and has less extraneous crap floating in the background.

Hmm, I wonder which one *I'D* go for...

Hurt me if you must, but let the duckie go!
