New Re: Bill Gates steps down.
Some of us in the office were discussing Bill G yesterday
The general feeling was that he can't be getting a big thrill
from Vista or Office 2007 (the old been there done that....)
but that there were still potential peak experiences to be sought
after:

thrashing Google
or Linux
or Apple

these have little to do with selling tons of software
but are probably MS goals

I've heard that end of the line talk before
but until I start to see real erosion in the bundling of
the current MS OS on most new machines and a real move
away from Office, it seems safe to say that MS' decline
is yet to come

New The tides of war are very weak...
in the deep end of the war.

Once the battles come closer to shore, the evidence will start rising out of the depths and those tides will be "Hefty, Hefty, Hefty" in the amount of effect they have, affecting many world views.

New Monopolies and their demise.
Historically, monopolies have often been at their most powerful well after the true decline had begun. Some analysts believe Microsoft peaked before 2000 but the decline will be slow.

Anyway, I couldn't resist last night writing a little article on[link|http://www.aaxnet.com/editor/edit040.html|Bill Gates stepping down] for my recently revived AAx Web site.

In any case, bundling will be the last thing to go - PC vendors will continue to give you no choice as long as they can because that's a whole lot easier for them. Only when they start losing significant business to someone who does give a choice will they change.

New Nits
Closing quote mark on the hypothetical BillG quote at the end.

There's no indication on one or two of the earlier quotes if they are hypotheticals, or if you're actually quoting someone. In particular, the "harder than we expected" line.

If this article gets any wide linkage, the Supreme Court line will probably get more response then the content of what you are saying.

New Yeah . . .
For the "harder than we expected" quote, I remember it from an interview with a manager for the accounting software section for an article, possibly in CRN, but it'd be hell trying to track it down even if it could be tracked down.

As for the Supreme Court thing - if you don't make at least one outrageous statement you never know if anyone is reading your stuff.

I'll fix that last quote, thanks.

New Nit #2: isn't it "SuSE" (w/ a lower-case 'u')?

"So don't pay attention to the approval ratings that say 68% of Americans disapprove of the job this man is doing. I ask you this, does that not also logically mean that 68% approve of the job he's not doing? Think about it. I haven't."

New No, they changed that, probably to make themselves . . .
. . more attractive to Novell. It's all caps now.
