New Re: Cursor Teleportation
Any ideas why optical mice exhibit this behaviour? I do find it rather annoying.

I have 3 optical mice, an old Logitech Cordless MouseMan, a new MX1000 and a notebook-sized cordless optical that came with my laptop. The weird thing is, I've only ever experienced cursor teleportation with the MouseMan and the MX1000.
New I've only seen it on mouse pads with nonuniform covers.
E.g. my wife's Mac G5 optical mouse pointer will jump around quite frequently when used on a mouse pad with a print of van Gogh's "Irises", but works perfectly on an old Micron mouse pad with a uniform blue cover. Her optical mouse on her Mac at work would jump around when used on a wood desk without a mouse pad, but works fine with one (also with a uniform cover).

Since it looks at reflected light to figure out how it's being moved, it makes sense to me that if the reflectivity is drastically changing quickly that it might get confused.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Much as it pains me to say it...
...Microsoft optical mice are just about the best I've used.

I have a Wireless Intellimouse Explorer 2.0 on the Mini (the smooth tilt wheel is funky):

and an original Intellimouse Explorer on the PC (mine is substantially less nice to look at after 3 years):

Neither has ever missed a beat.

Use P2P for legitimate purposes!
New I like the Logitech Trackman Wheel myself. 8 kB.

It's not ideal if you're a lefty though. Fortunately, I'm not. :-)

Cheers,
Scott.
New I experience it with my Optical
