As part of a cruise, I've been to Jamica twice.

The second time to avoid a hurricane.

The cruise excursions pretty much insulate you from the local economy and all but the local tour guides. Visiting Dunn's River Falls near Ocho Rios is the one spot where one is obligated to walk through a local artists market. The desperation of the vendors is quite unsettling.
