Local grocers work when most people pick up soemthing for "tonight's dinner" most nights. Modern grocery chains are all about shelf life. People expect to shop once a week ... or less. If it won't make the 20 minute trip home in the trunk, then a week or more in the fridge before you eat it, they won't carry it.

I'm so glad my wife had decided she likes the butcher at the end of the block better than the pre-packaged, gas-packed[1] crap at the chains.
