New Bush to ask for Guard troops on U.S. border
[link|http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12788967/|Bush to ask for Guard troops on U.S. border]

I don't think this is going to fly. Even Republicans are talking up against this. It looks like Bush is conpletely dead in the water.
New Even if it did, it would be a bad idea.
I keep having Kent State visions. National Guard troops aren't trained to be border police - that's not their role.

Even though the story is that NG troops would be in a "supporting" role, they shouldn't be there. They're being over-used in Iraq, so giving them yet another role (one that would be "temporary") is doing at least 3 things: 1) it's giving the appearance of it being political posturing by the Administration, 2) it increases the chance of increasing tensions along the border with Mexico, 3) it provides more evidence to those who think that Bush only sees military solutions to every problem.

I suspect it'll go forward in some fashion, and 4-5 months from now (after, perhaps, another couple of hurricanes) it'll be quietly ended and people will argue about whether the NG was stretched too thin to be able to respond to emergencies.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Is this the future?

I thought it was the past...

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. (Herm Albright)
New Much as I dislike it, the guns *are* pointing the other way

New Would be realtively easy to have them point the other way
Just think, we would help the construction industry, cement industry, munitions (would need an awful lot of landmines), and the electric company for the lights. Then we could hire a lot of TSA to man the lookout towers.

I forgot. We would also need a lot of dogs, trainers, and handlers.

Ecomomy would boom.

Do i REALLY need the sign?
[image|/forums/images/warning.png|0|This is sarcasm...]
New Think we could get mexicans to train dogs for cheap:?
Maybe man the towers for somewhat less than minimum wage? Gotta cut costs, you know...
New How about funding the border Patrol instead?
-----------------------------------------
Impeach Bush. Impeach Cheney. Do it now.
New Border Patrol would cost real money
NG is just sitting around with nothing to do...

New Yeah, Bagdad is real quiet
That's where they're "just sitting around" after all.

New Congress wanted to
Congress wanted to, but Bush pulled the funding so he could spend the money elsewhere. Congress voted for something like 10,000 new border gaurds, Bush slashed it to like 250.

One of the many reasons Bush doesn't want to touch this topic.

New Favorite sons
Well, we need somewhere to send all our favorite sons that doesn't involve sending them to Iraq.
New Hagel obviously hasn't gotten the memo...
Weve got National Guard members on their second, third and fourth tours in Iraq, Hagel said. We have stretched our military as thin as we have ever seen it in modern times. And what in the world are we talking about here, sending a National Guard that we may not have any capacity to send up to or down to protect borders? Thats not their role. [emphasis added]

It's their role, because Der Decider has decided that it is their role. Chuck, you really need to get with the program, here....

(Of course, the real reason to militarize the borders is to keep the inmates citizens in....

New Slightly OT: Who's enlisting in the reserves?
Everyone knows by now that if you're in the reserves odds are you're getting deployed for just as long as the regular units. All "reserve" seems to mean any more is that when you come home, they stop paying you and covering your medical bills.

New Ah! A "Star Trek" solution?
I was never one to watch the series regularly, but didn't William Shatner, like, melt down half a dozen cybernetic adversaries over the course of that three-year mission simply by proposing a paradox—you know, like "This statement is false," followed by spectacular electrical failure of the computerized foe? Seems to me that something like this is happening out in Red America. In my spare time (far from copious these days, alas, with multiple drop-deadlines looming at work) I've been lurking in the bleak wilderness of Right Blogistan, and I gotta tell ya, [link|http://blogometer.nationaljournal.com/archives/2006/05/516_missed_oppo.html#5|their heads are exploding]. Poor Dauphin, trying to reconcile the implacably opposed imperatives of his nativist greaser-hating "base" and his cheap labor-loving corporate masters. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

New his base may well be what you claim, but Bro marries them
Iffen Jeb did run, would that make a difference. Prolly not, not even mexicans like cubans.
thanx,
bill

New and everyone else in Latin America hates the Meskins...
whose Spanish is considered a barbarous argot, and who are widely regarded as giving themselves airs on account of their proximity to El Norte.

cordially,

New only the indios dislike the meskins
as I was reminded at the powwow friday, spanish is our second language. :-) although the wanna goto jail or pay the "passinthru" tax at every bus stop does not endear the Mexican Government to southerners.
thanx,

New What is the sound of an empty head imploding?
If a fundie right-wind whackjob blogger falls under the weight of his own contradictions, does he make a sound?
