New How to tell MSN Messenger to shut the fsck up?
My daughter, in her infinite impatience, decided to subscribe to MSN messenger, so that her family (that would include me) could send webcam images to each other in real time to say hi! to my granddaughter.

Have I mentioned that Micros~1 sucks?

So in order to make this magic connection, I have to have MSN's spamming computer hogging client on my machine!

Did I mention that Micros~1 sux?

So now, whenever I start my machine, MSN dutifully starts itself up, spews windows, advertisements and other assorted detritus all over my screen, hogs the inet connection for a while, and generally makes itself the overall nuisance one would generally associate with a Micros~1 product. Not to mention what possible holes it is opening in my firewall for "phoning home" and other such things that so-called company is noted for....

By the way...did I say how much Micros~1 sucks, yet?

So I have three questions for the Combined Sentience of the LRPD:

1) How can I shut off this noisemaker so that it only starts when I want it to and not when it wants to take over my machine?

2) Do I really even need their cleint to effect bidirectional webcam sessions? Is there another (non-Micros~1) client that I can use for this? Do i even need a client? (The Logitech webcam came with its own display-on-your-screen system -- can that be used to send images over the net?)

3) Do you know that Micros~1 sucks?

Thanks for your help...

"So don't pay attention to the approval ratings that say 68% of Americans disapprove of the job this man is doing. I ask you this, does that not also logically mean that 68% approve of the job he's not doing? Think about it. I haven't."

New I'd use HijackThis
You'll be able to locate it quickly, check mark it and turn it off. If you ever lose your mind and want it turned back on HijackThis tucks the commands in its backup folder so you can restore them. You should still be able to start it from the Start menu or make an icon.

HijackThis is a free download.

New In the registry?
Probably at the usual places of:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Run
or
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Run

Of course, HijackThis looks there, so if you don't want to futz with the registry, that'd be the way to go.
New All you need to do
is go to the Tools menu and choose Options
in the Preferences tab
uncheck the first 2 boxes (open when Windows starts and the allow it to run
in the background)

that's all there is to it

you may or may not live happily ever after but
it will be out of your face

New Thanks, folks!
I appreciate all the help. HijackThis seems like a cool tool, and I'll get it downloaded as soon as get my machine back from Micros~1's [link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/content/show?contentid=255517|choking on a new mobo].

Thanks again!
