Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Anything later than the 2000 release won't let this happen
They stop allowing adds to personal folders at 1.8 gig. (I thought they put that limit in for the 2000 release, sucks to have my memory) Outlook 03 allows as many adds as you want, it has storage supposedly in the terabyte range for personal folders.

New No bets but I've saved several pst files that hit 1.8
From my hands on experience, since Outlook 2000 the freeze on adding to pst files after hitting 1.8 gig has been pretty steady. Exceptions may happen but I haven't had to truncate a pst once since Outlook 2000/2002 got widespread.

The 1.8 gig limit "fix" is, for those of you following and not yet aware, a response to a limitation of MS Access which is the DB used for personal folders/pst files in Outlook. The absolute size limit in the version of Access used is 2 gig (yet another MS "we'll never need more than 640k" address space decision). A file hitting/exceeding that can sometomes be saved by truncation but this often fails and the entire damn thing is trash. MS put in a fix in Outlook 2000/2002 (patches) that would not allow any adds to the DB/pst file once it hit 1.8 gig.

If it can't reach the 2 gig auto-trash size, it's gonna be saveable most times. (every time, in my experience)

New Funny thing is that Exchange uses Access as well.
A different version, mind you, but it's still Access. :P

That might have changed with the most recent version of Exchange. When I was still there, they were talking about dumping the JET DB engine for SQL Server, but it was still talk at that point.
When somebody asks you to trade your freedoms for security, it isn't your security they're talking about.
New No it doesn't.
At least as of Exchange 4, it uses the same database format and engine as SQL Server.

NOT.

That is like putting a huge building on a balsa wood foundation.

New Actually Exchange uses ESE (aka Jet Blue)
Where Jet Blue is not the same as Jet Red, the engine behind Access.

I think MS tried moving to SQL Server while deveoping some version of Exchange and gave up because of performance issues.

New I didn't know that Jet Blue crashed that often
I'll avoid that airline in the future. :-)

Cheers,
Ben

New More similar than you'd think.
Jet Blue and Jet Red both came from the same base technology. There have been tweaks, of course, to make Jet Blue more "enterprise" worthy - but they're both the same basic design.

I spent some time working with the exchange group when I was at Microsoft...

New PST doesn't use Access (Jet Red) AFAIK
If it did, that would actually be a useful thing, as one would have a snowball's chance of extracting data from them without MAPI or some 3rd party reverse engineered library or app.

New There goes me assuming again.
Back in the Outlook 98 days when Access had a 2 gig limit and pst files had the same limit, I just assumed there was a relation. A little research shows (according to MS) it was an ANSI versus Unicode problem.
