Welcome to IWETHEY!

New ++
Finally got the confirmation. It was a tentative "yes" as of last Wednesday, but the one who had to sign the paperwork was out sick Wednesday through Friday. Two months of unexpected time off is tough, and I've still got another week or two to stretch the savings until I start.

I'll be back with some details of the gig after my celebratory lunch I'm about to go treat myself to.

"Chicago to my mind was the only place to be. ... I above all liked the city because it was filled with people all a-bustle, and the clatter of hooves and carriages, and with delivery wagons and drays and peddlers and the boom and clank of freight trains. And when those black clouds came sailing in from the west, pouring thunderstorms upon us so that you couldn't hear the cries or curses of humankind, I liked that best of all. Chicago could stand up to the worst God had to offer. I understood why it was built--a place for trade, of course, with railroads and ships and so on, but mostly to give all of us a magnitude of defiance that is not provided by one house on the plains. And the plains is where those storms come from." -- E.L. Doctorow

New Details
Gig is currently listed at 6 months, but that's phase 1 of a multi-year project at a bank.[0] I'll be Test Coordinator/Project Manager, defining and managing processes to ensure successful outsourcing of non-core business[1] to ASPs. (No, they don't still call them ASPs, that's so last century.) So I'm now another step away from code, and into business process. Which is a good thing.

[0] I've decided I don't want to be too googleable any more.

[1] I've been reading way too many job listings.

New My wife just asked what you guys had to say
I told her, "Umm, 'Congratulations', what'd you think they'd say?"

"I don't know. I thought you'd have some wierd geek language or something like 'Oinky boinky' or something."

I don't know which is worse: That she could come up with something that bizarre, or that she thinks I would.

New Drew, meet deep end
You know the scene in The Practice where the partners come into Tom Cruise's new office one by one and drop off big ol' binders on his desk? I don't have quite that much, and most of the people here didn't use the "this is the most important thing" line. But there is a huge amount of documentation on this project already, plus all the "normal" paperwork associated with working for a financial institution.

I expect it to be two or three weeks before I can make it through a meeting without stopping at least five times to ask for a definition of terms/acronyms.

New Well, at least you are able to ask questions.
Its good to go diving into the deep-end once in a while. Its amazing at how much you learn during those days.

I've really only went into the deep-end once in a job. I wish there was a way for me to do that more regularly, I get really heavy amount of "useless information bloat" during those times, it feels good. Well, at least it feels good to me.

I haven't felt glassy-eyed for quite a few years, in relation to IT stuffs. I should push myself to do more in the way of programming.
