New Default browser for evolution under KDE
Using Gnome apps in KDE and getting the right settings has apparently been a problem for [link|http://www.redhat.com/archives/xdg-list/2003-July/msg00216.html|about three years]. I've tried setting it in [link|http://www.linuxcompatible.org/Using_Evolution_Email_With_Firefox_Browser_t31948.html|the KDE Configuration Center]. I've tried setting it in [link|http://lists.ximian.com/archives/public/evolution/2004-April/037164.html|Gnome Control Center]. But I keep getting the wrong browser. Any other pointers?

Oh, and by the way ...

<rant>Why the fuck does a non-affilliated app like Gaim respect the desktop settings of whichever environment I'm running, but "Gnome apps" and "KDE apps" have their own supa-sekrit-mo-betta ways of doing shit that are mutually fucking incompatible?</rant>

New Working as designed? Don't use Evolution? :-(
You've found all the links I've found.

There's nothing obvious in the [link|http://www.gnome.org/projects/evolution/doc/evolution24.pdf|Evolution 2.4 Manual] (118 page .pdf) either.

Short of poking around in the source, or getting Greg to find a work-around, I think you're stuck.

Good luck.

Cheers,
Scott.
New We're working on the workaround
And it's tedious and frustrating. Will post when/if it gets solved.

New Okay, I have since chatting on jabber...
Come around to a revelation that too many applications define the browser themselves.

I have a simple(but tedious) solution that should work just fine.

Most distributions of Linux and *BSD have alternatives selection. Which gives a meta-name/psuedo-name to common user preference programs. Like for

In Debian, I have been able to get www-browser (for text based apps I use /usr/bin/lynx) and x-www-browser (for X or GUI, I use /usr/bin/firefox) based applications.

You then need to go and fix all of the settings in all the apps and environments to open /usr/bin/www-browser or /usr/bin/x-www-browser as the default browser.

Including setting in alternatives, the alternative gnome-www-browser to /usr/bin/x-www-browser

You should be able to get things to only open (x-)www-browser if you change it anytime the app opens the wrong browser.

I am in the process of actually installifying KDE, to ensure I have that covered as well, as I don't know if there will be a kde-www-browser entry or not, as I believe KDE relies on a config for that. In any case, you would still change it to /usr/bin/x-www-browser.

After all this, you should be able to set you favorite favorite browser to use in the alternative and only the alternative.

New Tedious but straightforward
Why hasn't anyone on the Gnome, KDE or Debian teams already done this? Freaking stupid, it is.

New Debian has made the alternatives available. (plus KDE upd)
But, it is up to the app developers to do the standardization.

Now for KDE, I found in the control center that there are a myriad of locations.

There is in KDE Components, Component Chooser. There is both email-client and web-browser.

Set those to your choosing (but web-browser) should still be /usr/bin/x-www-browser

For the Internet & Network, Web Browser location... all of that applies to Konqueror and Konq only.

After that for KDE, I don't know and you will probably have to fix each Application as they do it wrong.

New Problem is, Evolution isn't in the KDE configs
If there's a way to directly set it for Evo, I don't see it. My last guess is the changes aren't applied until I restart KDE. Will confirm that shortly.

New So, which browser *IS* coming up?
I guess I'll need to dig deeper.

\r\n\r\nBut good news, I did find more places to Fixify.

\r\n\r\nBad news, you have to use gconf-editor or blast into the xml yourself, and other places too.

\r\n\r\nHavoc, yes, I am sure you feel my pain when I say: DAM YOU!

\r\n\r\nDetails for gconf-editor:
These need to be changed to x-www-browser %s

/desktop/gnome/url-handlers/\r\n
  • unknown/command
  • \r\n
  • about/command
  • \r\n
  • http/command
  • \r\n
  • https/command
  • \r\n
  • ftp/command
  • \r\n
  • gopher/command
  • \r\n
  • chrome/command
\r\nThe following also needs to be changed to x-www-browser

/desktop/gnome/applications/\r\n
  • browser/exec

\r\nMore as I find them.

\r\n\r\nIf you dare to edit the holy XML, you are on your own. I will not fix any problems you come up with. You see, I am not a proper Gnome Citizen. Therefore, I am not helping the situation by allowing people to work on making things the way they want.

\r\n\r\nBUT, if you have the package jabber-helpdesk-ziwt-greg installed, you might get some help.

New Quanta, which is an editor not a browser
I assume it's because it's a .aspx link, but the only place I can find Quanta listed is in the KDE Control Center -> KDE Components -> File Associations menu as one of the handlers for html. But I already deleted Quata as an available handler for it. So I'm out of ideas what is causing it to come up.

New Actually I should do that anyway
There's no way I'm going to use it. But then I wonder what will pop up.

Uhhh ... hold on a second.

drook@drookenstein:~$ sudo apt-get remove --purge quanta\nReading package lists... Done\nBuilding dependency tree... Done\nThe following packages will be REMOVED:\n kde* kdewebdev* quanta*\n0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 3 to remove and 4 not upgraded.\nNeed to get 0B of archives.\nAfter unpacking 5708kB disk space will be freed.

I don't know that I want to remove kde*.

New I'd purge that puppy.
The other two package are meta-packages that are used to make installation easier.

You don't NEED to have them.

apt-get remove --purge quanta kde kdewebdev basically only removes quanta

The meta packages are optional and really only useful for installation.

Burn'em out.

And links in Evo finally work in Firefox. Woot.

New No, not at all.
What it is is a "package" that depends on a prefdefined set of installable items.

It is for ease of installation.

Instead of and apt-get install <insert 350 specific packages to get a "workable" install of KDE>

You get to do this:apt-get install kde
