I recently upgraded to the 2.6 kernel, and noticed I was still seeing 'Welcome to Knoppix (Kernel 2.4.20-xfs)' when I booted. I had assumed it was actually reporting info about the current kernel, and thought at first I hadn't actually gotten the kernel right.
Once I relized that wasn't what was happening, I went looking for that text and found it in both /etc/motd and /etc/motd.static. Now I know why it's showing up. Question is, since I'm the only one using this box, I don't have any need for motd. If I just delete both motd files, will I start getting an error message when I boot? Or will it show something from fortunes instead?
