New AjaxWrite
[link|http://www.ajaxwrite.com/|AjaxWrite] is a word processor that is dynamically loaded in your web browser. It can read/write .DOC files.

(Found via [link|http://www.michaelrobertson.com/archive.php?minute_id=206|Here] via [link|http://www.linuxtoday.com/|LinuxToday].)

I've only played with it briefly on FF 1.5.0.1 on Win2k.

On starting it complained that Javascript wasn't enabled (it is), but ran anyway.

It takes a long time to start even on broadband.

I loaded a simple ~ 5 page Word .DOC. It took a while to load, but it did load mostly correctly. It center justified the whole document (when only the first 3 lines were in the original), and didn't properly display bullet headings, but otherwise appeared to be correct.

It has potential, but it's got to be a lot faster for me to consider using it. It might be a handy tool for a kiosk or something, but since WordPad and Linux can already do what I did with AW, the market might be pretty tiny.

I'm sure MS (and Google and Yahoo and ...) would love for such a thing to work well so that it/they could start selling "Software as a Service"....

Cheers,
Scott.
