New Windows Vista delayed until 2007
[link|http://news.com.com/2100-1016_3-6052270.html|Vista debut hits a delay]

Microsoft on Tuesday announced a delay of Windows Vista that will mean PCs with the new operating system won't go on sale until January.

What do you think the real reason is? How does this affect Microsoft?

This is really funny. They delayed by a few weeks into January, supposedly to lock down some security issues. It's only March now. You're telling me that Microsoft can see a 2-4 week delay that clearly right now? Not a chance given their track record. I think this was just to get out the word that it won't ship for Christmas 2006, and then when this small delay turns into 6-9 months, no one will care so much because they already missed Christmas 2006.

New Re: Windows Vista delayed until 2007
From what I gather, the actual RTM date has slipped so close to the holidays (November 2006 from somewhere between August and October) that many OEMs and retailers just said "Fuck it. We don't have time to set up our marketing, supply chains and salesdroids for this and don't trust you'll get it out in time anyways, so just punt the big hype launch till January 07 when we have more time".

So it will still "ship" in 2006 and Volume License customers will still get it (like they'll roll it out any time before 2008 anyways), and consumers will have to wait till 2007. Maybe the OEMs will do free upgrade vouchers for xmas PC sales.

As for what is causing the slippage itself, there are several interesting posts to [link|http://minimsft.blogspot.com/2006/03/vista-2007-fire-leadership-now.html#comments|this thread] at mini-microsoft that point to a burdensome development process implemented after the "reset" last year as well as other management problems.

New It will probably be moved again
Microsoft will probably move the date again to sometime late spring or early summer for exactly that reason. This shift just made clear it won't be a 2006 product for the companies planning their marketing for the second half of 2006. The next shift will move it to the final realse date.

New You're an optimist
Personally I won't believe any schedule announcement from Microsoft until I hear that they are pressing final CDs.

New Because they have not moved the download date
They moved the date they intend to start retail selling it, but not the date it would become available to the big companies on the volume liscense plans. That makes it clear that MS really does plan to finish it this year, but that they couldn't lock the date down for the big computer makers.

I think MS is to the point they are going to ship Vista shortly, done or not.

New Gaaaaaa! My Microsoft stock dropped 1/2 point!
Everytime it's going up there's some reminder of reality and a few, very few, people realize the stock is overvalued. It only lasts a day or few but it's now so frequent - I need one last episode of unrealistic exuberance to sell above basis.

Well, who cares, really, I don't own much, inherited it, and maybe I'll need the $450 loss someday.

New Blimey.
Sounds like the natives are restless! I've not seen venom like that since the days of fuckedcompany.com. I always had the impression that despite what the external perceptions were like, Microsoft was a great place to work.

The times, they are a-changin'.

New What were you smoking?
And where can I get some?

Microsoft has SUCKED as a workplace since 2001 - and has continued to suck, according to people I know who still work there.

Sounds like the windows group would be one of the rotten ones.

Overall big river books can be a great place to work - except maybe for my little corner of it just now.

Maybe there's a lot more traffic and someone prunes responses mercilessly. But for the number of replies, there's a surprisingly high signal/noise ratio. And mostly well-spoken, too.
