I agree that it's not in Apple's interest - at least not at this time - to put OS X on a generic PC. Apple doesn't have the resources to make or promote drivers for generic PC hardware. It also needs its hardware sales to support its software business.

Now if someone could make a software ROM that simulated the Apple-specific bits, and provided the driver shims, then presumably OS X could run on a Dell. And that would be neat if it could be done with reasonable speed. But you can bet Apple would be all over them very quickly, for violation of copyright among other things.
