New Evading taxes.

Microsoft Corp., under mounting scrutiny regarding more than $16 billion of assets it keeps in Ireland to take advantage of low taxes, is reorganising its operations there in a way that will allow it to reduce public disclosure of those assets, the Wall Street Journal reported on its Web site.

o o o

The move follows several months of scrutiny of Microsoft in Ireland, as well as moves in Washington against the tax benefits the software giant enjoyed by transferring the revenue and assets to Ireland. Ireland taxes corporate income at a flat rate of 12.5 percent, while the official U.S. rate is 35 percent.

New In the Wall Street Journal too . . .
. . but the Los Angeles Times instead ran an article on the EU declaring Microsoft "still not in compliance" and that network protocol documentation submitted by Microsoft "continues to be incomplete and inaccurate".

New They all do it
For instance, big river books moved most of the servers that handle europe to data centers in ireland and luxembourg primarily for tax reasons.

New Wouldn't it really be avoiding taxes?
Much as I would love to see them nailed for tax evasion, tax avoidance is common. Even John Q. Public is encouraged to lower his taxes by investing in IRA...

New Yeah, I hear donating to the republicans is tax-deductible.

if you're one of the "right people"

New Well, the American Republicans
seem to be providing high rates of return to their patrons.
