New My Newton is dying...
It's been a little unwell for years now. The alignment shifts as it's used, requiring re-alignment every once in a while. The case is looking Very Well Loved with lots of smooth areas where the outer 'grippy' layer has peeled away. Just yesterday I noticed that one of the lid holders has disappeared, and last night the power button started getting funky.

I had a Handspring Visor for a while, but retired it when I broke the antenna on the phone module. I don't use my Newton for much in the way of calender entries or contacts; I use it mostly as an electronic notepad. OTOH, I did appreciate the phone/PDA integration in the Visor, but it was a poor notepad compared to my Newton. And although my Sony Ericsson K700 is a good phone, it's not a PDA.

Meanwhile, my wife is on her second Windows Phone. The first was an O2 XDA II, and the second is an O2 Atom. She encouraged me to get one, mostly because we both know I'd use it's calendering features. But I'm a little leery of a Windows device; especially the PC integration is with Windows 2000 or XP and Outlook. :-/

So.

What have people seen/use/recommend? If I upgrade to a phone/PDA, I could go back to my laptop for notes; it's more unwieldy than the Newton and the battery life is poorer, but the keyboard is better and the apps are (obviously) fuller featured. I guess what I really want is for Apple to create a new Newton! One that supports modern technology like USB and Bluetooth, proper IrDA and v.Card support. But I know that's not going to happen...

New I don't think there's anything perfect yet.
I have a Samsung i500 that I got off ebay. It works well, but the screen resolution isn't as high as my Sony Clie'. As a phone, it has more limitations than my Sanyo, but it works pretty well.

If there was something that had the form factor no bigger than the i500, the PDA features like the [link|http://www.palm.com/us/products/handhelds/tx/|Palm TX] or Sony Clie' TH-55, and the battery life of my Sony Clie', I'd be very happy. I don't want a camera phone, and I don't want my phone to be an iPod.

I think that it's still better to have a phone separate from a PDA at the moment. Big screen PDAs are nice, if they've got the resolution (something the Win PDAs and Win phones don't have). Phones should be small, have excellent transmit and receive properties, and have good battery life. Smashing all those features in one box limits the PDA or the phone or both.

Best of luck with the search.

Cheers,
Scott.
New which model Newton is it?
I have a 130 I could part with, provided it went to a good home.

New MS is threatening to release Origami
Which looks a bit like a Newton clone to me. (In fact, the original Newton architect went to MS when the Newton was killed).

New It might be interesting.
But there's the whole 'Microsoft Windows' thing again. :-/

I don't think I'm in any hurry, fortunately. If Apple decide they want the market for a PDA again (an iPad perhaps?), then I would definitely consider their offering. If MS get something to market first, then I would probably consider it, too.

New Seen this?
I understand that apple owns the patents to [link|http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iVI6xw9Zph8|this technology]. My brother told me he read that current speculation is that's going to be the UI for OSXI, and that there's a PDA/Tablet-ish device in the works. But you know how Apple rumors are.

That's the first time in a very long time I've seen anything truly and realistically next-generation.

New I'd agree, but..
..will it be possible to boot from another device at all on the thing?

I say two weeks from availability.

New Too easy to make usb 'non-bootable'
via the bios. It's not insurmountable, of course (prolly be easy) which is why I think there will be a delay.

New Windows phones were poo.
I had TEL.EXE crash on the SPV that I had a couple of years ago. It may have improved since then. I may even get one to hurt myself with - they're phun phones to have, but stability and performance phucked me over. That was two years and about 3 major versions of the software ago, though.

Bang/buck is best met by Sony Ericsson phones at the moment. The w800i in particular is a fine piece of engineering.

New That's not a mobile phone. 18kB .img
That's a ... something - something out of the late 1990s.

I was in Japan around 2000. School girls there had these amazing phones. They were several styles of them, the smallest were about the size of a MontBlanc pen. (Of course, I can't find a picture of them now.) They were tiny. I have no idea what the battery life was like, nor how they were actually used, but that's my idea of a mobile phone - something unobtrusive that you talk into and listen to. Not some giant honking $600 thing that tries to be a miniature 1985-ish PC.

No, they weren't Zoolander phones...

New They were smaller.
The things I remember were about 1.5 cm x 1.5 cm x ~ 12 cm. They really were about the size of a pen. If they had a display, it was very small.

They may have been analog-only phones and that may explain the small size. I dunno.

Cheers,
Scott.

New That Nokia looks like the one I just got my wife
Her mother just brought a new hip home from the hospital. As we live across the street, my wife is on nurse-maid duty. She wanted to be reachable, so needed a basic phone for inbound calls only[1], and only for the next 2-3 months. So I got her the cheapest phone at Radio Shack. They called it a Shorty, but it looked just like the one you linked.

Then I got her a $20 pre-paid card. $0.30 / day, $0.10 / minute. If, after the first week or so, we find she's not using it every day we can switch to no daily fee, $0.25 / minute for the first 10 minutes each day, $0.10 / minute for the rest of the day. If she's about to run out of minutes, she'll get a text message telling her to top it off, which we can do online, on the phone, or at any store with the pre-paid cards. If she doesn't burn all the minutes in 90 days, we top off again for another $20.

I'm never buying a phone contract again.

[1] Yeah, I know, but she promised.

New Nokia 770?
[link|http://europe.nokia.com/nokia/0,1522,,00.html?orig=/770|http://europe.nokia....00.html?orig=/770]

Looks interesting, but battery life looks a little short and supposedly the handwriting recognition isn't too good.

I'm using a 1kg laptop for notetaking.

New Found this. Anyone heard of it? (link fixed)

Looks interesting; I'm not sure about the dual-thumbboard and it looks noticeable bigger than my Newton. It's also not available to Australia, yet, either.

Wade.

Edit: fixed wee code for link.
