New Critiques \tLinux Networking: Hands-On (Multiupdates planned)
General (so far)
Searchable text, there isn't any. Appears you have done the whole PDF as 2 line images. This kind of defeats the purpose of a textbook. You might try printing to a pdf distiller(a-la ghostscript printer) to get the text searchable.

Embedding the 2 line images also has created a few issues with rendering. The rendering when the images cross a line you get either stunted or extended test and doesn't look as good as it should. This effect is is seen in two of the three PDF viewers I have. Acroread on Linux and Windows. XPDF on Linux (debian specifically), GPDF on Linux (Debian). [link|http://www.gregfolkert.net/pics/technical/LinuxNetworkingHandsOn/tn/pdf-render.png.html|example]

If you need, I have a "real PDF distiller" (Adobe PDF Distiller). I have also done some PDF publications using the cups pdf-printer.
Over all impression, it is well done and extremely friendly.

New I had issues with the PDFs

I spent some hours trying to come up with a file that wouldn't be rejected by Lulu's pre-press software. The problem was (apparently) embedded, subsetting fonts. ( I think)

I can't justify ~US$200+ for a copy of Acrobat but the print drivers on Adobe's site appear to be for OS 9.

I agree that I'd prefer searchable text myself and I'm open to suggestions.

They are exceptional.

New I'm writing this on OS X

Can I use those without Linux?

Since I'm using OOo (well, NeoOffice), I can generate a press-ready PDF. But when I try to upload it, Lulu tells me that it won't RIP. Do you think it would be better to dump the PDF to a PS file and use that?

I notice you have had a Lulu account longer than I have. Have you used it to publish anything? If so, any war stories?

I'm going to try a small PS file and see if it converts cleanly. (Lulu recently updated their conversion software.)

New Sure you can.
Look here:

[link|http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/sources/ttf-bitstream-vera/1.10/|http://ftp.gnome.org...stream-vera/1.10/]

However, be aware that they lend themselves much better to screen usage than they do to print. Serif in particular is a bit of a dog's dinner, occupying an uncomfortable visual space somewhere between Palatino and Rockwell.

Here's some visuals:

Just install them with Font Book the way you would install any TrueType font.

New Fixed it
Looks like Lulu's new conversion software accepts PDFs from OOo.

I just uploaded a new file and put out a new edition.

There are no changes in content, so if you've ordered a hard copy don't worry.

For those of you who have purchased the downloadable version, please drop me an e-mail (tsinclair AT mac DOT com) and I'll hook you up with a link to the new searchable PDF so you don't have to buy it twice. (I think only George Lucas is allowed to double-dip these days.)

I look forward to additional comments!

Much better too.

Does this mean I need to purchase the new edition too? $10 ain't bad.

New Re: Seeing as it is only 4.3MB Now! Formerly 71MB!

No. There are no content changes with this edition. I simply uploaded a searchable PDF instead of the PDF image file. That also accounts for the file size difference.

If you've already snarfed the download, drop me an e-mail and I'll hook you up with the new PDF so you don't have to pay twice.

Unless of course you really really want to, that is. Being as it's a free country and all that.

New Interesting...
Peter, the Bitstream web site you linked to has renderings of the Vera Mono that bear no resemblance to the fonts downloaded from the site folkert linked to. In particular, the rendering of the lowercase "ell" bears no resemblance to the web site rendering.

So are there two different "versions" of this typeface?

&mdash an unidentified letter writer to Newsweek on the expansion of executive powers under the Bush administration
New It's down to the hinting.
If you fully "hint" the fonts, as you would most likely do for on-screen display, then they'll look very different.

The rendering technique you see there is probably the Freetype "none" configuration; whilst it's fuzzy, it's a more faithful representation of the printed character.

They're the same font.

New Also, Cleartype sucks dong.
And it's very cruel to Vera.

New Although both those are probably true...
...it's not the issue.

Here, (under Windows), the "ell" looks much like it does in the monotype.com face...sorta like a half swastika, with a stroke extending westward from the top of the vertical stroke, and another stroke extending about the same distance eastward fromthe bottom of the vertical stroke. (The difference between monotype.com and vera mono is that on vera, the junction of the eastward stroke with the vertical stroke is curved, where in monotype.com, the junction is squared, so I know its not a font aliasing issue).

On the website, the "ell" renders more like an old block numeral one; very much like an "ell" in the Rockland face, only with the horizontal strokes longer and more pronounced.

If that's a hinting difference, then that's one helluva hint! I've personally never seen hinting that fundamentally alters the presentation of the typeface. Have you?

New Here.
Ubuntu defaults to using Vera.

Here's "Full" hinting:

Here's "None" hinting:

[image|http://homepage.ntlworld.com/peter.whysall1/no_hinting.png||||]

That's a huge difference, visually speaking.

I'll snarf a Windows screenie at some point.

New I don't think it's hinting. I think they're different fonts.
In Winders:
Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Fonts

"Bitstream Vera Sans Mono (True Type)" has the "half-swastika" lower-case "L". "Bitstream Vera Serif (True Type)" and "Bitstream Vera Sans (True Type)" don't (rather they look like a typewriter "1" and a single vertical line, respectively).

I suspect some sort of font mapping is going on that causes the differences you're seeing.

[edit: typos]

Cheers,
Scott.

New What are you talking about, young whippersnapper?
I'm far too senile to remember the question; you say *I* asked you something? How can you know? That was hours and *hours* ago!

I owe this facile explanation to my advanced old age, which has brought me so much wisdom that you must honour and respect me. Sit at my feet and beg to be allowed to learn from me, that sort of thing.

Or something...

What was it you were selling, again?

Have you seen my goldfish anywhere?

I must have mislaid it.
