Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Does it really "insist" on its own repositories?
Debian is Debian. You should be able to change your sources.list.

New Agreed
Debian is Debian. If you've got the disk space to mirror a full repository (or at least, packages that you want installed), you should be able to set up your own. Ask Greg. I think he's done something close to that at some point...

Meanwhile, welcome to the group. :)

New Okay,"insist" was a little strong

But my understanding is that Ubuntu packages are tweaked Sid packages and they don't mix well with the standard Debian ones.

In any event, I believe that's how I horked my Xandros install (though it gave me two years of good service) so I don't think I'll fiddle with my sources.list for now. I have plenty of other boxes to experiment with.

New They were going that Direction...
Until there was a plea from Ian to stop the madness. At least for Ubuntu.

Ubuntu and Debian are working together now. Very much so.

Debian needed something to kick its rear into gear. Sarge just took longer than was tolerable. Ubuntu, may have a great idea, release the cream every six months. Let everything else catch up.

Ubuntu (at least for X86, X86_AMD64 and PPC)IMHO, is what Debian strives to be for all Architectures. Debian just got lost in the in-fighting and politics (it is still there and just as loud, but progress has a way of making it loud). I still use Sid for all of MY workstations, but I actually have an Ubuntu Server doing all of my test work, I build and tear down regularly on it. No, not re-install the OS. Re-Modeling.

Ubuntu does have many rough edges where Debian is nice and smooth... but Ubuntu is still young and many eager people are still wanting in. It will only get better, as long as they keep the eye on the ball. Calling it properly.

I will go out on a Limb and say that eventually Ubuntu will become the Debian "workstation" sub-project that has been kicked around for so long. Eventually may com sooner than you think.

So, at one point there was a divergence tendency in Ubuntu... due to the slow crawl of Debian. Debian is benefitting from Ubuntu more and more... which in turn benefits Ubuntu. More and more coop/collab-eration is making the Debian world a faster place.

On a sidenote, the Debian Infrastructure that needed to be made better (BTS/Archive Maint/Build Daemon Maint) all appear to be gettting cranked on. I see massive improvements (and construction pains sometimes) in the quality of info being collected and used and propagated by Debian.

And yes, I have a partial mirror of Debian for my stuff @ work. Home now no longer needs it as the Internet speeds have dramtically improved for me. Plus I now use the distributed canonical names for the Debian archives. err like this: ftp.us.debian.org for US mirrors... etc.

Sounds like it may have changed since you last posted it.

New Sure... mostly generic now
I needed to update [link|http://www.gregfolkert.net/files/sources.list|My sources file], Thanks for doing the request.

I don't have an Ubuntu (sources.list) one... yet. Could be the same one just with entries commented out. (Like it has now.)

Hope it helps.

New Marillat's repo is pretty much superfluous in Ubuntu.
Provided you have all the repositories turned on.

(Don't forget to enable universe, multiverse etc).

It's a real life-saver for vanilla Debian, though.

Use P2P for legitimate purposes!
New I think I said that. :)
And I do have them enabled in Ubuntu...

Reformatted to take one line per archive rather than 8 or 10

It works.

New Okay, though I'm using totem
But on this box I don't need to bother, as I never got sound sorted out. I'm just holding out for the first paycheck to get a new PS for the other box.

New Re-modeling?

Not sure I understand the process, but it sounds interesting. Care to share?

New Okay. I guess it could be a new idea. (Update)
Here is my method of Madness.

Build a "server" with nothing on it cept base, ssh and a couple other connectivity packages.

I export that list, via: dkpg --get-selections > /root/archive/base-server.pkg.list

I then always have a list of packages to go back to. Sometimes I use it sometimes I don't. But I can always go back to base, without worry.

Now, using aptitude just like apt-get, I install everything I typically need for the server stuff I am testing. Ubuntu has nearly everything Debian has (barring a few things that are extreme fringe stuff) so I test a setup. If I blow it up and it'd be more work to "fix" than to purge and re-install...

I grab the currently installed list, cat both lists, sort it, then uniq

cat /root/archive/base-server.pkg.list current.pkg.list | \\\n sed -e s/\\\\t/_\\\\t/g | cut -f1 | sort | \\\n uniq -u | xargs aptitude install
Adding an underscore(_) to the package name does a purge of the package and config files
Adding a minus sign (-) to the packagename does a remove without purge.

Also, any packages automatically installed by aptitude that were reccomended (they should be in the list to remove anyway) will be removed also.

Basically, from then on it is a "Lather, Rinse, Repeat" kinfd of operation. The only things that change using the "dev" branch of Ubuntu package names and package layouts vary widely depending on the activity in the dev branch. Currently that is Dapper.

Same thing can and has been done on my Debian machines when re-deploying them.

Update: I changed something in my bash environment... That "cat" statement doesn't work on Ubuntu anymore. But, good ole bash ordered execution works it pretty good.
aptitude install $(cat /root/archive/base-server.pkg.list current.pkg.list | \\\n sed -e s/\\\\t/_\\\\t/g | cut -f1 | sort | uniq -u | xargs)
That should work good on older setups as well, mainly because I regressed backwards on the compatibility making it "more" posix compliant... though not completely

New Very nice!

It may sound odd, but Linux is so easy to install that I've just been wiping and rebuilding.

That's a good solution for rolling back, though. It's going into my 'Neat Hacks' file.
