Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Pity me
I get to use [link|http://www.aspose.com/Products/Aspose.Word/Default.aspx|Apose.Word]. Now I can "cleanly" write Word automation routines inside .NET. head.bang(wall).

Or as it would probably look in .NET.
public void partial degenerate abstract pointless _head: System.bodyparts.tophalf.head\n{\n  protected void something orother head_process(object sender, EventArgs e)\n  {\n    if (e.type == "wall") {\n      this.doAction["bang"](e.object)\n    }\n  }\n}

The really sad part is that this is the best solution me or my boss could find to the solution of printing labels from a web page. So what the application is going to do is load a Word file, mail merge it, and then push the result to the users. They then open it in Word and print it.

I was hoping that after all these years I wouldn't have to do this sort of crud any more.

New No no no no no
Dump the data into a table. Have an insert trigger that calls a procedure that builds a postscript file and dump that to a print queue. Or if you want real-time feedback that it's about to print, do the whole thing dynamically and skip the db part. (I'm used to thinking in terms of high-volume image generation. Everything queue based.)

New Has to print client side
New One of the many report engines available wasn't good enough?
This one appears to allow you to run the report serverside and provide a PDF to the client, instead of using the report viewer ActiveX control:

New I'm sure there would be one
I tried a few things, none of which could do what we needed easily. Label printing was a big sticking point. MS's own report services, for instance, when given 4 quarter inch rows to print, prints a block that is almost exactly 15/16 of an inch high.

I'm sure there is a report tool that would be better then what we are doing. But I didn't have the time to weed through them to find the one that could do what we needed effectivly.

New Meaning what?
Oh wait, you're doing something like UPS, offer your customoers the chance to print labels over the web? Can't you just create a PDF and let them deal with getting it to their printer? Do you require a label printer, or do these go to laser/inkjet printers?

New I've done it
In both PCL and PDF. Very easy Perl tool kits for text, image and barcode generation, along with overlaying to background images.
New this should help

if that doesn't do it for you, try this:

New Do ya think Word Automation has improved since 97?
I remember trying to write report generation using Word 97 Automation. It was so unstable, performed so slowly and had so many bugs, such as the cursor jumping out of the header if the page size was queried, that I gave up after 3 months.

And then ran into the swamp of RTF.

You have my sympathies.

Choose Life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fucking big television, choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance. Choose fixed interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisurewear and matching luggage. Choose DIY and wondering who the fuck you are on a Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pishing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked up brats you spawned to replace yourself. Choose your future. Choose life... But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life. I chose somethin' else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who needs reasons when you've got heroin?
