New On dvd burning (in Linux or not)
Do I really need a dual-layer burner -- and that oh-so-affordable blank media to go with it -- to burn dvds? I would think if I'm willing to put up with turning a dl disk into a 2-disk set I should be able to. Am I fooling myself? Will this not be possible with commercial Windows apps?

If there's something that makes this straightforward in Linux, that's the preferred option. I just haven't played with any burning software under Linux, so I don't know how it compares.

New Don't know about the dual media
But to burn a Linux dvd, it is VERY easy.

growisofs -Z /dev/dvd -R -J .
New Doesn't work if the source is dual layer
Lots of current DVDs load just enough crap onto the extra features that you can't conveniently burn it to a single-layer blank. And my kids have destroyed enough originals that I've decided they only get to touch copies from now on. I'd like to be able to select which extras to leave out, or put onto a second disk.

New Re: Doesn't work if the source is dual layer
The lazy way I've been doing it is

  1. Run dvdbackup to make a copy of the DVD on the hard drive.

  2. Run DVD Shrink 3.2 under Wine on the resulting VIDEO_TS directory.

  3. Use the re-author functionality to grab/split the main title, leaving out menus, extras, previews, alternate audio tracks, etc.

  4. Generate an ISO image up to a DVD-5

  5. Burn ISO to media using growisofs

There's apparently a native Linux solution as well call dvrequant @ [link|https://sourceforge.net/projects/dvrequant/|https://sourceforge....ojects/dvrequant/]. Never having used it I can't say anything on its efficacy.
New Sweet, going to try tonight, thanks
