Anyone know how to remove WinFixer?
Got a friend who has it. A quick google turns up stuff offering to remove it, but all involves installing something else that doesn't look too trustworthy. So what'll whack this one?
Oh, and I'm going to probably go look at his system next weekend. He says he keeps getting popups, if he tries to close them they open up more, and his 1-yr-old computer on a cable modem "feels slower" than his 5-yr-old computer with DSL did at the old house.
Yeah, I'll be there for a while.

This thread talks about it...
[link|http://groups.google.com/group/24hoursupport.helpdesk/browse_thread/thread/f9a17c592406930f/a70c24a9dc320a43?lnk=st&q=winfixer&rnum=1#a70c24a9dc320a43|Google Groups]. If you can sort through all the insults, there's probably some useful info there. In particular WinFixer (Vundo) has a fix on [link|http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/trojan.vundo.removal.tool.html|Symantec's site]. Someone also indicates in that thread that the latest [link|http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/|AdAware SE] will remove it also.
Caveat emptor. I've not tried either of the fixes.
HTH. Good luck!
Cheers, Scott.

I've removed it several times . . .
. . but by hand with my usual tools - HijackThis
- LSPFix
- AdAware
- DllCompare/Killbox
- Command AntiVirus
- Control Panel / Add Remove Software
- RegEdit
I don't know just what I used, but I'm sure HijackThis was the main one. It didn't require DllCompare but I'm not sure of the rest. I'm usually using everything at once to remove multiple infections so it's hard to keep track. Some require doing it all in Safe Mode.

I fill like a shill...
Get Spyware Doctor off download.com. It's a time-limited version, so it will stop in 15 days, but it should remove WinFixer for you in the meantime.

Willing to pay and register, but if I can get it cheaper...

Sorry, I can't do that for you.
And certainly not in a public forum! :-) It is our flagship product, after all.

That's possible.
I'm not across those sort of changes. I know for sure the one off www.pctools.com is scan-only. There is a time-limited scan-and-fix version, but they might have taken that off download.com.
