Boot any recent Linux liveCD.

mount the "/" and "/boot" (assuming minimal config here) on a new directory (like sysimage)

so it looks like this:

/dev/hda3 mounted on /sysimage
/dev/hda2 mounted on /sysimage/boot

/dev/hda3 has to have everything grub needs to run on the new machine

then issue this command to replace the boot record:

grub-install --root-directory=/sysimage /dev/hda

Change the above commands and mounts as needed.
