Bali vs. Levolor custom spring-loaded blinds
I put Bali in Duncan's room, Levolor in Aidan's (Bali didn't have the right color, according to my wife).
I'm putting the Levolors in the trash and buying more Balis, and damn the color.
Levolor == piece of shit.
The instructions are ass, the mechanisms don't balance the blind correctly, and one of the blinds showed up with 1) a broken string and 2) the slat cord NOT EVEN IN THE FUCKING SLAT HOLES. Nice little scrapes all the way down the front too, caused by the machine missing the holes, I imagine.
Gah, what a debacle.

Skip the blinds.
Get shades instead. They're no fuss, the block light better than blinds *and* you dont have to dust them.
Plus they're cheaper and if you're crafty you can decorate them yourself. (Or so I learned on HGTV)

Nah, get something like this
[link|http://www.blinds.com/control/gallery??productID=8523#|http://www.blinds.co...??productID=8523#]
The air pocket is a good insulater, and the double layer ensures light blockage.

Never had a problem with light blockage.
The Bali light blockers have no holes, and I mounted them outside so they completely cover the window.

I don't like shades.
I've always preferred the look of blinds.

Our Levolor UltraDark blinds and Cellular shades are OK.
We like them. We got them via Home Depot about 7 years ago. The blinds have that dust-repelling paint and the cellular shades have an appearance similar to blinds but collapse further when fully pulled up and give some insulation when fully down.
I wonder if their quality control has gone to Hell. The Bali blinds that we saw at the time looked very cheap and not very appealing.
Apparently the UltraDark was replaced with the LightMaster design a few years ago and it has [link|http://www.theblindalley.com/blinds/riviera/mini/lightmasterinfo.html|some issues].
We did try some of the Levolor cordless cellular shades on a couple of doors (with 3x3 windows), but they failed very quickly - they wouldn't go up and down anymore (within a couple of weeks), so we replaced them with corded models. I don't think we'd try the cordless ones again.
We'll be getting new windows soon and will have to get a few new blinds/shades so I'll keep your experience mind.
One final thing to note is that Levolor is part of Newell/Rubbermaid and they've been having [link|http://www.forbes.com/facesinthenews/2005/10/17/galli-ceo-rubbermaid-cx_cn_1017autofacescan04.html?partner=yahootix|a tough time recently]. FWIW.
It's terribly frustrating when quality control at American companies seems to be job Last. :-(
Cheers, Scott.

These are LightMasters
And they exhibit exactly those problems.
The broken one has scrape marks on every slat where the machinery missed the holes with the string.
The other problem with the blinds is that the balancing mechanism gets off and the blinds hang cock-eyed.

I don't have them, but I like those Pella windows
with the blinds sandwiched between the glass. Now those are uber cool. No dusting, no installation.

Forget blinds
I want the LCD windows that grey out at the touch of a button like Kitt.
