New Corrupt CDs (no copy, no play, and sometimes -- break HW)
A number of lables are now distributing "corrupt CDs" -- these prevent copying of contents, but often fail to play on otherwise compliant hardware, and in some cases are linked to HW damage.

There's Fat Chuck's Corrupt CDs: [link|http://fatchucks.com/corruptcds/|[link|http://fatchucks.com/corruptcds/|http://fatchucks.com/corruptcds/]]
...and Boycott-RIAA.com's mirror: [link|http://www.boycott-riaa.com/corrupt_cds.php|[link|http://www.boycott-riaa.com/corrupt_cds.php|http://www.boycott-...rupt_cds.php]]

Note that the links both list labels, and CDs, provide additional information, and provide feedback/response facilities for reporting to various stores and the FTC.

What part of "gestalt" don't you understand?
New What happens
if someone copies the files off of the CD to the hard drive, and then burns a new CD from the install files on the hard drive?

Unless the install program checks for the bad part of the CD, I don't see how this could work. Even then the Pirates know how to patch the install code, sometimes turning a JNE to a JE statement in disassembling the code.

I've had bad and uncopyable CDs before. My son spilled Soda on a few and they cannot be played, copied, or otherwise used. One CD he just grabbed it and broke a part off of it. I should have the ability to make a backup before my son destroys the CD.

New Um, Norm?
Links and FAQs can answer this for you.

The copy control is designed to prevent that in the first place.

...when it works. Macs and Linux systems may be able to read the disks. There are also some work-arounds.

I'll let you do the math from the following scenario: a method is found to rip files from a protected CD to disk, rendering them non copy-protected.
