How do I send SMS messages via dialup?
I want to monitor our network links and send an alarm if they get swamped, which means I can send a message via email.
I have a Cingular Treo 650.
I assume I'd place a modem on my Linux monitoring box, and dial SOMEWHERE.
This FAQ says nothing about dial-up: [link|http://www.cingular.com/media/text_messaging_faqs|http://www.cingular....xt_messaging_faqs]
I guess in a worst-case scenario, I'd dial to an ISP, create a connection, and then send an email. Would be yucky.
Any alternatives?

You being sarcastic?
No shit sherlock!
The question here, without a net connection, do I HAVE to create a PPP connection to somehwere 1st, or is the a direct dialup method for send pure numeric messages as if I was sending messages to a beeper?

You can't do shit with PPP on its own.
You need to dial into an SMS service centre with an appropriate piece of software.
GIYF.
I believe that if you pay people money, things like ICQ and MSN Messenger can sprout this functionality in both directions (computer<->phone)

no internet connection except for dialup?
why not use the modem to direct dial the phone and callerID should alert you that home is in trouble. Once the connection is made Im not sure the phone will understand the modem. thanx, bill

Yup
That's the point. I'm constructing a monitoring workstation.server. Xeon. - not dual yet, but will probably require it. PCI-X and PCI-Express slots. 9 Gbit ports - 7 copper, 2 fiber. Room for a bunch more. Will be running ntop and tcpdump in logging/capture mode. Will be tracking almost all our corporate network traffic, with the Ciscos mirroring the key routing ports. So one of the things it needs to do is alert on certain conditions. One of the conditions is a total network outage. And yes, I though about call-id dialing, but this has to also go to help desk staff, which really needs more than a phantom phone call.

the following may help
I would suggest cellular because in a total network outage, land lines may be down as well [link|http://www.landlinesms.com/|http://www.landlinesms.com/] brit made, you would have to check for compatibility
this appears to be the best bet so you could send SMS messages to an on call cell phone [link|http://www.arcelect.com/CDMA_Digital_cellular_multi-mode_data_modem.htm|http://www.arcelect....de_data_modem.htm] of course mapping SMS messages via AT commands could seriously suck gluck bill

Alternate approach
Monitor for network outage from a machine at another site.
If a monitor there doesn't get hear a regular ping, it sets off alarms.

Are you sending from the phone...or receiving on the phone
to receive...your email address is "your phone#"@cingular.com. To send is traditional email addressing. Receiving and sending is done by the cell network.
So no...I wasn't being sarcastic. Why are you rambling about dialup?

Understand now.
You cannot dial to cingular as an isp and send a message. You will need to use something like netzero to send the email...or have the computer call your phone and have callerid alert you that its the pc calling.

I think I have a fallback ISP account to use
We have Fiber to our ISP. Bursts to 100mbit. I think they provide a dial-up for this situation. Waiting for my boss to get back with the info.
